Hi all, my name is Michael Gresham, and this is my site to give people a chance to connect in, and about, Michigan City Indiana. My vision is to give people a place to talk about their City through a well-moderated, open access forum. Initially I have areas set up for local news, sports, business, and an off topic area. This will give people a chance to talk about what is going on in their town, and exchange information with other people.
If people have ideas, questions, comments or anything else feel free to post them here, to send me an emai,l or a private message.
As you may know, I am trying to get people to send the link to everyone on their e-ddress list.
Do you think it would be better to have the posts in the threads in newest-to-oldest order? I do, because when you click on a topic, you don't want to see the original posts all the time, you want the new stuff. That is how most MBs are, I think.
This is the first one I have seen like this.
bimp!
Still think it is better new-to-old.
Roger, keyboard tip: If you want to jump to the end of the page to see the last post without having to scroll through all the old stuff, hit Ctrl + End and you will jump to the bottom. To get back to the top, hit Ctrl + Home and poof! You're back to the top.
I have always seen these things oldest on top, but many have a short cut button at the top that will take you to the bottom. As a matter of fact, Feedback is the only place I've seen newest at the top.
Yeah some of the old bulletin boards had the new to old format, but I help run about a half dozen other message board, the largest with over 3500 members and 1.3 million posts, and I have yet to hear anyone else say it was backwards from what they were used to.
Ohmigod! It's happened again--I'm right, and 3,502 people are wrong!
I used to go on the Left behind boards years ago before they changed it, runner's world, and a few others, and they all went new to old. If your experience is different, was it because you run all yours the same way? What is your experience with boards other people run?
So is TAPS and many of the Yahoo groups I belong to
Well, ok, but it still is harder and less elegant (in the math proof sense) to do it your way. Too bad there is not an option to do either.
It would be nice if Invision gave us the option to do it either way, but they don't unfortunately.
It does help to know how to move around faster using keyboards tips--thanks!
Regarding the letter to outline what MC needs in a mayor, I would be glad to proof it. I would suggest perhaps emailing it rather than doing it in the mb.
I wanted to say "Welcome" to all of joinees that have come in here lately. It is great to see so many new faces! Hopefully you all enjoy it here, and if you have any problems or questions, feel free to contact me either with a post here, a private message here, or through an email.
cool site
Sorry guys, I am running a little behind on the news! I had a long weekend, and did a whole lot of relaxing. I will try to get caught up tonight or tomorrow.
Sorry its been a little quiet around here... I got picked for jury duty, so I haven't been able to get the board updated like I usually would. I should be done tomorrow.
Big case?
Nah it was a pretty small civil case. It could have been solved years ago IMO. Personally I enjoyed the experience as it was the first time I had ever been called to jury duty, let alone served on a jury. I might be kind of a dork, but I love to see how our government and civil operations function. It was incredibly interesting to be on the inside of a jury trial and see the particulars of it.
I was on a jury some time ago when we lived in Bloomington. It was some case where a school administration apparatchik was suing for wrongful dismissal. It ended up as a directed verdict. I agree that it was very interesting being in on the machinations of the system.
I have had members of the family be witnesses in cases, and that was interesting, too.
In general, though, I am a lot more comfortable staying away from the courthouse!
FYI I will be out of town from Wed evening the 20th until next Wed the 27th. Keep the peace for me while I am gone!
Mike
I've been to Gettysburg. It's really cool. Very eerie though when you think about all the people that died there during the civil war. You can almost feel the ghosts. If you have a chance, try to take a ghost tour. Whether or not you believe in them, the tours are very neat.
Gettysburg is AWESOME. Take a guided tour from the NPS.
Well we did get down to Gettysburg, and it was well worth the trip. We took the double decker 2 hour bus tour and it was incredible. The scope and the scale of what went on there is just awe-inspiring.
Gettysburg is a great place to visit. I was just there in May, and I already wanna go back.
I'd can't wait to go back when we have more time. It was really a tease at an incredible place.
Hi everyone...I just found out about this message board. Very interesting - looks like a place where some serious thought (at times) can be brought up concerning Our Fair City.
Administrator,
Is there some way to change one's avatar but leave it on the posts already done? The effect would be that only one's new posts would have the new avatar.
I think if one wanted to change one's avatar, one could change one's ID.
Do you want to change your display ID from Roger Kaputnik to something else? I can do that for you if that's what you want. Just tell me the new name you want displayed and I'll git'er done!
I'm pretty sure it works that way, just like the avatars. SS'der would know for sure.
Do you start over with the number of posts? Fr'instance, if Roger had 2000 posts and changed his name to Bob, would Bob then have 2000 posts, or just the number beginning after he changed his name?
Ï think I am good as is. I just liked the mummy avatar and did not want to lose it for all the posts that had it.
In the Scrap Metal thread, http://www.citybythelake.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1360&st=0&gopid=9971&#entry9971, I tried to type the law I was referring to, IC 25-37.5-1.2b, with the final 'b' in parentheses. But when I saw what was posted, I was surprised to see some kind of smiley-type face--see post #8. In retrospect, I think this has happened before. What is going on?
Can they be turned off on my keyboard?
And I am searching for a thread that was about Funny Lines from the Campaign, but I cannot find it. Is there another way to look? Maybe by going through all the threads I started? I can't remember if I did or not, by the way.
Merci beaucoup!
First, I would like to announce we have over 10,000 posts!!! HUGE landmark.
Second, we are one member shy of having 100 members!! Another huge landmark
Third, and most important, WELCOME to our newest members!! Some of you haven't posted yet, but we know you are there. We are happy for your interest in CBTL and look forward to your input. So, don't be shy!!
Both of those milestones are very big achievements that we are very proud of here! It really goes to say a lot to the quality of posting that we have had here in the year of existence of Citybythelake. If there wasn't good conversation and contributions from many people, no one else would be posting or reading here.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
You know how much I enjoy the topics, the give-and-take, the information and viewpoints from other corners. It is fun.
And today we have member #100! Yeah!!!
Welcome Michele! As member 100 you have made CBTL reach a HUGE landmark.
Here is your prize:
Administrator, I noticed that there are nearly 900 threads on the city talk section. There are 5 pages of topics listed. Where are all the threads?
thanks-----i wanted to bring up something in the racism thread
Recall is an occassional problem.
We've got a lot of new members in recent days. I can't keep up with you all!
I would like to extend a Welcome to all the newbies. Please enjoy yourselves while you're here. We don't mind lurkers at all, our mission here is to provide information and some of you are here for that purpose only. However, the more participaters the merrier we will be, so feel free to throw your two cents in any time!
Admin Ang
Yes.
Somehow you double posted Dave so I deleted the duplicate one.
I wonder who you could be talking about?????
Hmmmmm...........................
Roger perhaps?
Or Maybe Tim, he's the picture guy.
The pic is Dave Berg's (of Mad Magazine fame) Roger Kaputnik. Roger was Berg's "everyman" in his comics.
Southsider, aren't you a Wikipaedia editor? If you are, look at the MCHS entry and see if we can't come up with a little more for 'em. Sheesh!
I have the rights, but I have never looked at the MCAS page. One of these days I will have to get over there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_City_High_School
Let's get some nnew stuff on there--something positive, by gollly.
hello everyone benn living here my whole life lokking forward to posting
Welcome to the site!
And, frankly, we can use more new voices.
Admin, is it possible to modify one's screen name? I noticed that in the Two Coaches Suspended thread some of the newer members were using their initials and IQ. I want to use "Roger Kaputnik (RK134)."
Ha ha! Just kidding! About the IQ thing. But is it possible to modify name without re-joining?
Well, crud! Maybe I'll have to change my name too. I'll be AngOneBillion
Just how does one use scientific notation on here?
Better yet, I'll change it to AngPi
Ah, Avogadro's number...
Do you know that that is exactly how many moles are digging up my back yard?
Oh, good, I thought it was open-ended.
Alert for non-children friendly pun! If you are not at least 21 years old, do not scroll down!!!
Even if the tax money bailout spigot is not open-ended, the taxpayer has definitely been rear-ended.
Hi all. Just wanted to introduce myself. My husband and I moved to Michigan City a couple of months ago. We are formerly from Indianapolis. Everyone we have met here keeps asking us WHY would we move to MC from Indy? I love Indianapolis and believe it is the nicest and most friendly capital city in the country. We loved living there. However after 30 or 40 years, we have enjoyed the best Indy can offer and we still go back to visit at least once monthly. Our daughter moved to Michigan City more than a year ago. During our visits to her, we found we really liked the area and decided to try to move here also. My husband is an avid fisherman and loves ice fishing. When we lived in Indy, he had to drive at least an hour or more to find really good fishing areas. My work is done at home (I am an online software trainer) and so I can live anywhere there is a phone and internet connection. The added benefit is that I do not have to drive to work. I love the beautiful Michigan City snows in the winter (again maybe because I do not have to drive to work in them) and the vibrant lakeshore summers here. I will say I am impressed so far with the city’s response to the snows and ice – the main roads here are almost always cleared and passable in a very short time period. Indianapolis has a little more trouble keeping up at times and it takes them longer (but of course they have more main roads also). I realize that we will be considered newbies here for at least twenty years, but we now embrace MC as our home and look forward to meeting many friends here.
Welcome to the Board IndyT. Glad to have you. I am Ang. I grew up in City and graduated from Elston HS in 1984. MC is my "home" but I currently live in Casper, WY. I moved here in Aug 05.
Again, welcome and I hope you enjoy this place as much as the rest of us.
Anyone hear from Marram lately? Tell him to pm me.
bump
Roger, I have no idea what happened to Marram. He never made it to the meet and greet either.
Sorry.
As of today we have 200 registered members! And we are less than 100 posts away from 20,000 posts!
Welcome to all new members. There are so many of you registering lately that I can't keep up. I know a lot of you are here because of the Redistricting thread, but I hope you will take the time to look at and post in the other threads. We have a lot going on here. There are book reviews, restaurant reviews, polls, and quizzes. Plus, we don't always discuss 'City, there are many other discussions related to National and World events.
So, please dive in, catch up on some of the older stuff, and throw your two cents out there. We're glad you're here.

Wow. You learn something new every day. I always wondered how people were able to post the copyright symbol in their posts. Now, I know!
I want to issue a big "thank you" to each and every person involved with citybythelake.org. From the people who just stop by to read, to the admin/mod staff here, each of you has played a vital role at making this site a huge success in 2009. Just in the last couple of months, this is the first local place to break such stories as the school closing potential, NIPSCO being rated as one of the worst polluters in the USA, Ohio Street falling apart a month after repaving, and the MC boys basketball team being asked in the the Valpo U holiday invitational. Best of all was sharing the reactions and feeling surrounding every story in Michigan City with all of you. I look forward to an even better 2010!
Thanks all!
Michael Gresham
Testing out the new 2010 version of the user name
I just saw that taxthedeer posted that we have hit three hundred members, which is just awesome. We also have 450 followers on the citybythelake facebook page, and a few more on the twitter page. It is awesome to see so many people following and contributing to this incredible site. This wouldn't be possible without all of the great personalities and contributions of all of the people here.
THANKS AGAIN!!!
We've had several new members join in the past couple months and it's hard to keep up with everyone, so I would like to take a moment to welcome some of our newest members to the board:
Backwoods, Burning Blood, Dawn, Dolores, Dusk, inkoteMechl, Jenna, Jesse B, John Taylor, ksmi55 08, Milldew37, praterteaches, and Wayne
There are many others who have also joined recently, but have not yet posted. To those new members, I say Welcome and we would love to hear from you guys, too. Posting is not a condition of membership here, but we value everyone's input.
Good morning.
Good Morning to you, and welcome to our board!
Happy Anniversary to ME!!! It's been one year Wednesday since I discovered the local blog site in a google search became a CTBL member, this has become one of my favorite stops on the World Wide Web, it won't be long until I make my mark as one of the overall top ten posters. Thanks everyone for putting up with my nonsense for the past 365 days.
This morning was the 1 year anniversary of the ISP prison break. What was really amazing was that 160 unique users logged onto CTBL at once to find out up to date information.
Yeaahhhh......
We are proud of this little place.
Happy Anniversary to you and thanks for being a member!
Todays show from 5 to 6 pm on AM 1420 is going to cover a lot of school board and school system stuff, including the newest member of the MCAS.
With this post I proudly become one of the Top Ten overall CTBL posters. Virtual high five everybody.
:high-five:
Hmmm, this is all so strange...
We've had a bunch of new members lately, so I want to bump this up and say Welcome to the Newbies!!!
Also, I want to remind everyone that our 4th Annual Meet & Greet will be held at Matey's Restaurant in Michigan City on Monday Dec 27th at 7:00 pm.
All members are welcome to join us, you do not need to RSVP but it would be nice to let us know if you are positive you will be there.
Additionally, I would like to tell you some "fun" stuff about the board:
--When you are in a forum list, and you see a little red box next to the thread title, you can go to the last unread (by you) post in that thread by clicking the red box.
--You can bold, italicize, underline or perform any other text function in "quick reply" by simply putting a [b] at the beginning of your word and at the end put . Now, to keep from changing my font in that last sentence, I had to use different letters, but b= bold, i=italics, u=underline, etc. This also works if you want to put a paragraph in quotes. You would type
at the beginning of the paragraph and at the end, use the same thing, only with the "/" symbol before the word quote-inside the brackets.
you can change the color or size of your font the same way. you would type color=red (or size=6) with the square brackets around it-- [ ] -- to have a red font and at the end you would put that little "/" symbol and just type the word color between the brackets..
Season's Greetings, and Happy Holidays!!!
Congratulations on recently registering your 400th member and have over 1000 "likes" on your Facebook page.
Um....we don't really have a protocol for that. If you can make it work, do it. Welcome to the site. I love your input!
I've now surpassed the 1000+ post count.
Just want to let everyone know that I've been trying to update the calendar of events. Anyone can post in the calendar, the link is at the top of the page. If you know of something coming up, or a special activity you want to share with the rest of the group, please feel free to add....
I include links to websites with more information, but feel free to post however you want.
Also, if you're looking for something fun to do, please check out our calendar. This is something I just started doing, so if I've missed anything, please show me some mercy and add it yourself. I promise, as time goes on, I will get better at it.
Also, if you add something to the calendar, please PM an admin or mod as events have to approved by one of us before it will appear on the calendar. Thanks.
Don't forget to check out our calendar of local events.....lots of fun stuff going on around La Porte County, and a lot of it's free!
Go Have Fun this weekend!
We've had several new members sign up over the past couple days, so I want to use this thread to welcome all the Newbies.
We thank you for joining our board and look forward to your input.
Please remember to be respectful of others as that is our number 1 rule. It's ok to disagree, but play nice.
You can scroll through old comments in this thread to learn tips and tricks to navigate this board, also you can ask if you have questions. In City Living, there is a thread called CBTL: Catch all anything thread. You can post your questions there and someone will answer them.
Again, Welcome to City By The Lake!
Don't forget to check out the calendar of events. There is a lot of fun stuff going on over the next several weeks. Get a jump on your friends and be "in the know" about what's going on!
I've got September updated through the 15th. If there is anything I missed, please PM me, or you can add it to the calendar yourself, just let an Admin know so we can approve it and make it viewable by all.
Thanks!
I see we have had a few new people sign up lately. Again, I want to welcome all the newbies to our site and remind everyone that our number one rule around here is PLAY NICE-lest ye be censored.
Please remember to check out the calendar of events--upcoming events are listed at the bottom of the home page. I've been working hard to keep up with it. If I missed anything, please feel free to add and PM (personal message) me so I can approve it for public viewing.
If anyone has editing or formatting questions, you can either PM a member of the mod/admin team, or simply post your question the Catch All Anything Thread located in City Living.
Thanks to the Newbies for joining the board. We have been around longer than I anticipated and am thankful to all of our members for making this place what it is and keeping us alive--this December we will be celebrating our 6th birthday!
I've updated the October calendar--lots of fun stuff going on for all walks of life....be sure to check it out.
We've had a couple new members join in the past couple weeks and I'd like to extend a big Welcome to our newbies!
Hey All!
Season's Greetings to everyone. No matter what your religion, or your preference for Holidays in the upcoming months, I wish you all the very best!
The December Calendar has been updated. Check it out and see all the fun stuff that is going on around here. Lots of concerts, plays, and free stuff happening around LaPorte County.
If you know of anything I haven't posted to the calendar, please PM me and I will get it added right away!
Do you all ever meet for coffee or anything? I belong to a few other forums and we have actually had parties where people have traveled 2,000 miles or more to rub shoulders with each other. Just wonderin. . .
I'm in! I won't have to travel so far as the last one we did.....
I'd go to these meet ups.. .but I drink too much.
