Les's Garage. It was on Lake Ave just up from LaCuisine's on LSD. You could rent great big ol' inner tubes for the beach and get a BAG FULL of candy for a nickel.

Posted by: januarygirl63 Apr 23 2008, 04:44 PM

OMG, I remember Les' garage down by LaCuisine! Us kids used to love going in there and buying Bubs Daddy bubble gum (we always loved the green apple!) yet for some reason, we were scared to death of the old guy!! And as for LaCuisine, they used to have some of the BEST pizzas there in Michigan City! Since we're on the topic of lakefront memories....how about Ramona's Cottages??? Ok, let me be a bit on the talkative side and add more....how about Slisher's 76 gas station on Second Street, as well as the Two Sisters grocery store right down the road from there. If I remember correctly, the man who ran it was named Leo.

Posted by: Ang Apr 24 2008, 09:05 AM

Green apple was my fav, too, but I also liked the grape, and I agree with you about that old man. He scared the hell out of us, too. There was no way anyone was going to steal anything from him!! One time I got busy and didn't return an inner tube in time, that old man was knocking on my door! Told my parents that if I can't be resposible enough to return items that were loaned to me, then I didn't need to be borrowing any thing any more! I got grounded for a week for that!
Aaaaahhhhh, those were the days when discipline was important.

On that note, my next entry is....

One more - The Glass House

This was on the NE corner of 421 and 20. There used to be signs on 421 coming north from US 30 - they'd say "Only 19 more miles to...." - " only 17 more miles to...." When my sisters and I were little kids our grandparents live in Columbus OH - we'd always come across on 30 and come up 421 - I vividly remember those signs. The food here was very good.

I remember the A&W root beer stand on Hwy 12 (Second Street). We lived on Mulligan Street back in the day and would always get a bite to eat there every now and then. Since we're on the topic of that area....how about.....Froms (it was a hardware store) and Josam?? Dunham-Bush, Blocksom (they had 2 companies, one just off of Trail Creek and the other, on Center Street), and the ever-so-scary (to me, anyway!) 2nd Street Bridge??? That may be because A&W root beer stands and B-K root beer stands looked alike. I think there was a central distributor, and local frnachises added their name. I know the "K" in B-K stood for the lat Bill Kenifeck (sp?) and the "B" might be for Burgerson - a prominent name in MC hot dog lore. So there you go!

Okay - The Barn. I guess I'm older than a lot of posters here - we don't seem to remember the same things. The Barn was on Michigan Blvd - east of the SS tracks on the North side. The used to have rock bands from Chicago and DJs from WLS come there. I remember one time either the Buckinghams or The Crykle played there - I was too young to go, but the next morning after church we're eating at M&M and some of the band members came in. I was totally into the Beatles - and these guys had hair! And Beatle boots! I was in awe.

Hey Dan! Welcome to the board!

Posted by: Dan Jun 19 2008, 02:49 PM

Thanks, Ang!

I forgot:

The Spaghetti Factory

....worked there as a teenager.

Go explore the wooded area behind Jewel to see the ruins of the old mansion that was back there.

Posted by: Ang Jun 19 2008, 02:51 PM

Is it still there? I thought they tore it down when they built the new Jewel. I'll have to take a walk back there next time I'm in town. I've told the kids about it, but since I thought it was gone we never ventured back there.

Don't know if this is true or not, but my mom told me it used to be Winski property. JHeath, know anything about that?

Posted by: Dan Jun 19 2008, 03:11 PM

It was in shambles long before Jewel was built. But parts of the walls remained, and the concrete tennis court was was left to the elements.

I also remember an old log cabin, way back in the woods, somewhere between Lindos and the old auto scrap yard on 20.

this is getting off-topic, but my brother told me stories of a building downtown in the square that actually had a sub-basement with a sand floor, and a little creek/stream flowing though it. I can't remember which one, though...

No, that was the Ruby manison, not a Winski property. In fact, I believe that area was at one time known as Ruby Woods. I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong. (Where is Southyards when I need him...?)

Posted by: Ang Jun 19 2008, 03:18 PM

Well then maybe I'm confused with the property on Franklin between the CSX tracks and Coolspring. On the east side with the fence, I think it's across from Dr. Pejic's house. I know there is a pool cause you can see the slide (or there used to be a pool)

Yes, that one, along with the more modern looking home, and Dr. Pejic's old house (he no longer lives in that one) are all former Winski homes. smile.gif

Posted by: Ang Jun 19 2008, 03:43 PM

Okay. Cause I remember my mom telling me when I was a teenager that the Winski's owned half of Franklin St. I know she was "slightly" exaggerating, but it was something I never forgot her telling me. She told me that cause I remember making a comment about wishing I knew who lived in the house that had a slide for their pool so I could so swimming in it. She said, "Well, then you need to make friends with a Winski cause they own half of Franklin St."
Now, 30 years later, I am finally friends with a Winski. Hey JHeath, can I go swimming in that pool? laugh.gif

(bolding mine)

Now that's something I'd like to see, it sounds pretty cool.

Sometimes our place has a stream running through the basement -- when it's raining really hard and the drains get clogged. This is not what I consider cool, however.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jun 25 2008, 03:34 PM

While whitewater rafting in West Virginia, we visited a site of a house that once was quite grand, and it had a creek running through the basemen, too. Maybe it is more common in the fancier houses of yore.

212 Bargain Center....I remember they would have 1/2 price sales on all records and tapes(before CDs) 1 weekend a year. It was a great time to stock up on music tapes.

Orange Julius at the mall.

Gold Mine at the mall......threw away a lot of quarters at that place.

There was an indoor mini golf and arcade at Evergreen Plaza for a couple years in the early 80s....anyone remember the name?

Don't remember the name, but I remember going there. Ooohhh, the time I spent on the centipede machine!!! That was MY game!
Then there was some game that had little people you could move around. I remember saying to my friends, "One day they are going to make a video game where you can actually have the people walk and sit and climb ladders and fight. You'll be able to make them do anything" My friends thought I was crazy for even suggesting that.

Posted by: Tim Jul 23 2008, 10:48 PM

The Gold Mine! When I was in high school me and a couple buddies would spend HOURS in there - we were total pinball freaks. We played Four Square and a couple of others - and we could make a quarter last for an hour. We were also pigs - we all smoked - and we'd just lay the cigarette on the glass , which would stink to high heaven.

Thanks for the memory!

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jul 24 2008, 07:15 AM

AHA! So YOU were the one doing that!!!

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jul 24 2008, 07:22 AM

Guilty as another who spent too much time and money in the Gold Mine. I was a Crystal Castles nut.

Posted by: ChickenCityRoller Jul 24 2008, 09:37 AM

Was the gold mine the gold mine before it moved to next to the corndog place? I remember it used to be on the other side of the mall in a normal store front but can't recall if it was called the gold mine.

Posted by: southyards Jul 24 2008, 02:55 PM

Well, JHeath
Better (very) late than never. And, of course, better never late. You are correct about the Ruby property and the title of “Ruby Woods” as it was popularly known at the time.
As an interesting sidebar, the nearby property where now resides the South Side Shopping Center, was a large field (many years ago). That’s where the circus used to set up shop when it came to town. Came in on the train downtown and had a parade, elephants and all, right up Franklin Street to that site and then set up the tents, using the elephants and volunteers. Was a big deal at the time.
There was (most likely still is) a pool at Nate Winski’s former house with a slide. That would be the house across the street from Dr. Pejic’s house which was formerly owned by Henry Winski. That particular house had a tiny pool, but a pool nevertheless.
Right next to (South of) Nate’s house is another house with a good size pool. That house was formerly Mort Winski’s house and was bought by Dr. Walters, a loooong time ago.

Posted by: Tim Jul 24 2008, 04:18 PM

Speaking of old MC homes, there's a big white, White-House-looking home on Boyd Circle at the curve between...Lawndale and Garrettson. That house used to be on Franklin St. where what became Walters Clinic was built. I remember sitting on my bike watching them move it up Barker Rd. It was quite an operation.

During the 1950's and 60's I would stay at my grandparents cottage on stop 2- can anyone remember the well known fish/perch and shrimp place that was located on or near a bridge near a river? We are all trying to remember the name. Thanks

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Aug 6 2008, 03:55 PM

I think he means by the 12 bridge but I can't remember the name of the place.

Posted by: Ang Aug 6 2008, 04:18 PM

Tim would know. He knows everything.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Aug 6 2008, 04:32 PM

yes, there, by where bridges restaurant be now

Posted by: TSNSPYDER Aug 6 2008, 07:41 PM

I remember Wonderland on Mich Blvd. I used to buy Wacky Packages from a store down the street.
Shopper's Fair turned into the United Skates Of America.
Gold Mine used to be the Library in the mall.
I loved Colonial Bakery, the lady made the best glazed twists, gingerbreadmen, and eclairs I've ever had in my life.
Is Rose Bowl gone? What happened to the bowling alley? Is there just one bowling alley in town now?
I remember Baskin Robbins (or I'm thinking of a different area) as being Bressler's 31 or 33 flavors (or some name to that effect). Used to like their bubble gum ice cream.

Here's a few of mine (if I say something that is actually still around I apologize)
Danner's
The other game room it was next door to the Robin Hood. It had black and white lines going to the entrance. That was the first place I played Space Invaders.
I not sure if this was mentioned but don't know if Dunes Theatre is still there. Before they would show a movie they would show that little projector that would shoot out the balls and the music. I still remember that music theme.
Thom McKan (sp?)
Delaney's Furniture
Al's Furniture Mart
Michael's Home Furnishings
Kmarts ham sandwichs, you'd buy a row of six or so in a plastic bag.
Anxious Al's used cars
The putt putt golf and driving range next to anxious al's
Bassett Lincoln Mercury
Ulrich's Paint and Glass
Meyer's Paint and Glass. I know there is still a Meyer Glass but it's not the same, the nice guy who originally owned Meyer's died in the 80s.
Swartzlander GM
Don Jones Datsun
Rusty Jones (hello rusty jones, goodbye rusty cars)
The electronics store on Mich Blvd, I think it was by the chinese restaurant. I bought a Technics linear tracking turntable from them in '83, still have it.
Blieden Cameras
G&G Photo (I think it was called G&G), best camera store in MC. Bought a Minolta XG-1 from them, don't have that anymore.
Kienetz's, was a little grocery store in Trail Creek.
Zip's Convenience Store
Mobil gas on corner of 20 and Johnson Rd, used to buy pop in bottles there.
Ole United Cigar shop on Franklin Square. They used to be on Franklin St by a Shell station, but they were a different name then. My Dad used to bet football and horses there. Wonder if you can still bet football under the table in MC.
Jim's Fiesta Villa
Gilbert Television
Robert Hall. I used to love the woods behind Robert Hall. Robert Hall closed before I moved out of MC.
Disc Records
Hook's Drugs. You could actually buy chemical ingredients off the shelf. I bought sulfur and salt peter and made smoke bombs.
Joy Manufacturing
Phillips 66
Clark Gas Station
Sullair
GD Ritzy's
Brown's Fried Chicken

Posted by: Tim Aug 6 2008, 08:08 PM

^^^^

Wow - great list! Sullair's gone? Really? What happened, I wonder.

Here's one that was there and now isn't. For a very short time there was a small trampoline area between the north end of Park N Shop and Carlson's. I seem to remember a lot of injuries, forcing its demise.

Was it Furness Fisheries?

Also, Sullair is still very much a part of Michigan City. They have a few sites here...2 on Michigan Blvd (looks like one, but they have seperate buildings) and another on Hwy 12.

Yes, Rose Bowl is gone. It's now a Salvation Army on one side, and AJ's Bar on the other. The Johnston Family closed it when they moved their operation to City Lanes (located on Woodland Ave). We still have two bowling alleys--City Lanes and Suburban Lanes.

Posted by: ChickenCityRoller Aug 6 2008, 09:27 PM

Furness and or Ritter. The Furness family still owns a good deal of that area between where the 12th street bridge was and where Blocksom is.

Posted by: billsand Aug 8 2008, 12:00 AM

Nah, those names don't ring a bell. Thanks anyway. It was so long ago; many memories such as the great fireworks they would have every 4th of July, we would all sit on lawn chairs on the beach and watch the display, b-k root beer stand at stop 2 and the little grocery across the street run by Belle and her husband. Just curious, what does stop 2 and the beach area look like these days? Haven't been out that way since 1969.

It's been fun following you guys! What memories!! After racking my brain, I've come up with some places that I don't think have been mentioned.
Remember 8th Street Cafe? The basketball team ate there after away games.
The Other Side--wasn't it Buzz Russell that had a band that played there
Pezzuto's grocery

Posted by: Ang Aug 20 2008, 09:13 AM

I remember riding past that place when bands were playing - the inside looked all purple and smoky - like a Dean Martin/Matt Helm movie. You could kind of see the band - as a kid, it was pretty intriguing.
