That is what our sources are telling us ! Makes perfect sense to us. Boyd won a Title at Gary Westside with a group of at risk student athletes and he also did well this past year at Michigan City with a similar student population.. Can you imagine what Boyd can do with King Teague next year and a supporting cast that includes Josh Gentry and several other D1 Prospects. One thing is certain, Elite players will never again leave Pike Township as 8th graders. BAD NEWS FOR THE REST OF MARION COUNTY SCHOOLS !!

In 2002 Coach Boyd's West Side team defeated the Pike Red Devils in the state finals to win the championship.

That would be horrible. It would be a big blow for City.

Reg Tisdale posted this, he's the administrator of that website, maybe someone should call the school and get confirmation.

Someone also said that they haven't even completed the initial round of interviews yet. Ugh. Please let this be false.

I believe Pike Township school board meetings are Monday nights...we'll see if they vote on it. I hope it's false, too. Anyone want to email Mr. Tisdale?

I emailed Boyd. I worked with him all year through WIMS. Hopefully we will hear.

Another poster on that board states that coach Boyd is one of six finalists for that position.

He has interviewed, no job offer yet.

And can I just say that it isn't that expensive to get a decent message board. A threaded message? Hello, 1996 is calling, and they want their technology back.

Looks like they fired their previous coach for failing to win despite having one of the top point guards in the nation who will be a senior next season.

Just by searching through the list of finalists, IMO coach Boyd would be the best long term candidate for the job.

One things for sure, quite a unique set of circumstances surrounding the Pike Township girls basketball team. blush.gif

In the category of FWIW, the same site that posted Boyd was going to be hired at Pike, is now reporting that he is not in the running anymore.

Another update reporting that Boyd was not in the final three candidates. I am going to try to catch up with him over the next couple of days to get his reaction.

Bill Zych, former Perry Meridian coach has been named the new Pike Red Devil boys basketball head coach.

Well, that's good for City right now. But, if Boyd is already looking for another job, what does that mean for the future of City?

I guess that's the risk we take when you hire a big name coach or manager, it's no different than a corporate setting. Headquarters will send someome to run the plant for a short term, he/she does what they to do, they get another promotion then move on and relocate somewhere else.

That's kinda the thing that bothers me, they actually are not willing to LIVE in Michigan City.

I talked to Boyd on Friday. He told me that he is going to be back next year for sure.

According to the Post-Tribune City Assistant Murry Richards may be returning to West Side.

Garland likely out as coach at West Side
Sources say first-year coach won't be retained
May 23, 2010BY MIKE HUTTON, (219) 648-3139 OR MHUTTON@POST-TRIB.COM, BLOGS.POST-TRIB.COM/HUTTON

Winston Garland era at West Side appears to be over after just one year.

Garland, who replaced John Boyd after he departed for Michigan City after 11 seasons as the West Side boys basketball coach, likely will not be recommended to be rehired for next season, according to multiple sources.

The Roosevelt graduate, who played eight seasons in the NBA, is still making a case to try to keep his job with West Side administrators. Garland declined to comment.

The Cougars finished 7-12 this season, losing to East Chicago Central in the first round of the sectional.

Off-the-court, not on-the-court, issues plagued Garland. Several sources indicated that West Side used at least one ineligible player during the regular season, meaning the Cougars might have to forfeit victories, and Garland was suspended for three games this season for failing to get his background check done in time. Coaches in Gary are responsible for making grade checks on their players and making sure they are eligible.

Boyd coached the Cougars to a state title in 2002. He replaced longtime coach Ike Brown.

If Garland is dismissed, Murry Richards, an assistant with Boyd at West Side and Michigan City, is a likely candidate to replace him. Richards was a candidate for the job last year.

Garland came to West Side after coaching with the Steelheads and with a prison team in Michigan City.

Good for him. He is a nice guy, and it seemed like the kids worked well with him here. Best of luck to him.
