I was having lunch at a local watering hole this week when I overheard a conversation between someone who appears to be an account executive with a local newspaper and an employee of the establishment. The account executive was explaining subscribers would soon have PDF access to the newspaper via its website. She also mentioned the paper would no longer publish on Tuesdays beginning sometime in July.
Has anyone heard anything about this? I think the paper has gotten a little better with recent management changes, but I understand it's a sign of the times as well. |

I've been waiting for them to cut costs by going to a county-wide newspaper.

Everything is being AUTOMATED these days....journalists, reporters, writers, editors, photographers, you name it. QUOTE Mr. Hammond cited a media maven’s prediction that a computer program might win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism in 20 years — and he begged to differ. “In five years,” he says, “a computer program will win a Pulitzer Prize — and I’ll be damned if it’s not our technology.” http://nyti.ms/Sp1x2Z _ |

With all of the corruption and incompetence in LaPorte County, it is a damned shame that there is zero investigative reporting done. The ND reports the news, but doesn't dig into it. The radio stations just parrot what they are told. Facebook does a better job of investigative reporting than anything else.

They confirmed that beginning July 1 there will be no Tuesday paper and that they are improving their website. With their short staff I think they are doing as well as possible. They are all good people and hard workers.

Why choose to have no paper on Tuesday? I would think the best option would be no Sunday paper.

--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jesse B @ Jul 1 2014, 09:42 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> Why choose to have no paper on Tuesday? I would think the best option would be no Sunday paper. WAY more advertising on Sunday, plus a higher price tag. Most everything is pulled off the wire and not much relevent news in a Sunday paper either. Oh well, I guess this is the start of the end of the N-D. Did they put it in the paper that this was starting today? I know they didn't tell me this when this asked for my subscription renewal. |

The new website counts how many articles I view. It limits the number of articles viewed to 8 each 30 days - will have to try to find that cookie counter on my computer and delete it! New articles only limit viewing to first few paragraphs.
I certainly understand ND wants to monetize its website. It's getting harder for me to follow what is going on in my hometown. The South Bend Tribune and NWI Times often have better stories about MC than the ND and the stories often appear in print a day or two before the ND. Maybe SS2K wants to provide complete news coverage of my hometown. SS2K's staff of one is almost the size of the ND reporting staff. |

All news these days are going online, going mobile, and going in pinterest pictorial format. Nobody these days has the attention span to actually READ newsprint in bygone text format anymore. |
