Big win tonight 56-52 over Lake Central. City held a 20 point lead in the second half, blew it all, and then made some clutch plays late to win this one. They are now 12-8 on the season, and their next game against Merrillville is for 2nd place in the DAC.

Tough draw actually for MC. I know they have beaten Chesterton and Merrillville but it will be a lot more difficult on a nuetral court. Championship game will more than likely be against the winner of CP or Valpo. Valpo at home will not be easy either.

Rotten draw for City. Could have not been any worse even if they set it up that way.

Yep, the favorite has to be the winner of the Crown Point vs Valpo game.

I think I will skip Wednesday. But will probably go if successful on Friday and championship Saturday night and buy $6 ticket for both nights.

Don't like having to travel to and from Merrillville 3 nights in 4 days.

Wolves lost last night to Chesterton.

I will see everyone at MCHS for football in August.

Rotten end to a promising season. What is this now 20 years without a Sectional title? Why is it a basketball town like MC cannot win a sectional? I don't buy the big suburban schools reasoning either. Is Chesterton that much different than MC. . .Tax?

Whenever people ask me what ever happened to Michigan City basketball I tell the that I moved here January 3, 1993, ten weeks later Elston won the sectional and lost the next week to North Judson the day game of the Michigan City Rogers regional. Another year went by and Elston and Rogers consolidated and the first thing Bear Falls did was kick all the boys off the team because he told me that he never put up with anybody's B.S.

City has not won a sectional since.

I remember that 1987 Chesterton sectional championship well. My junior year at Portage High School. The Trojans where led by a guy named Matt Nover who went on and played for Bobby Knight at IU and portrayed the fictional character Ricky Roe in the movie "Blue Chips" starring Nick Nolte and Shaquille O'Neill.

Portage was favored to win the sectional that year as they were led by a pair of seniors Mike Wologo and Jim Havrilla. Chesterton knocked off Portage in the opener and the Portage Township School Board held a special session the following day and fired coach Greg Kirby as Portage's boys basketball coach. Kirby moved on to Valpo and led their girls program to four appearances in the state finals. Greg Fisher took over for Kirby at Portage and led Portage to the schools first regional championship when I was a senior in 1988.

Some things to know about Michigan City basketball vs the good ol days.

1. When Elston was winning sectional titles annually, they were one of the biggest schools in the entire state of Indiana. In the late 60's Elston was graduating about 1000 kids a year, meaning they had about 4000 kids in grades 9-12 to pick a basketball team from. As of the last release that number was 1701. For comparisons sake, LaPorte is 2009, Chesterton is 2030, Valpo is 2065, Merrillville is 2228, Portage is 2486, Crown Point is 2664, and Lake Central is 3196. Lake Central equals almost two MCHS's in terms of enrollment. If you look at the top teams in the state of Indiana, they are almost all over 3000 kids. Carmel is actually pushing 5000. City's population is down something like 10,000 people over those days. Even since 2011 City has fallen from the 39th biggest school in the state, to the 51st.

2. When Elston was winning sectional every year, their sectional was a joke. Most of the schools were pre-consolidation schools which had something like 100 kids in them. Today those schools can't legally exist, and have been gone for decades. City had 20 to 30 times as many kids as most of the schools in their sectional. Today, City is by far the smallest school in their sectional because of the class system.
