QUOTE ON TO DISNEY WORLD!!!! Regional Championship: Junior Pee Wees 20, Memorial Park (Ill.) 6 Nick Dettmann Staff Writer YPSILANTI, Mich. - The cold medals hung around the kids necks and clung off their chests with every leap of joy. They were as wide-eyed and happy as any 9- or 10-year-old kid would be at this particular moment. Tears seeped out of every coach's eye - until it froze to their cheek. The cameras were out to capture every piece of this historical moment. With the 20-6 victory by the Wolves' Junior Pee Wees on Saturday at Rynearson Stadium on the campus of Eastern Michigan University over the Memorial Park (Ill.) Spartans, the Wolves accomplished something they've dreamed about since Aug. 1, and what no City Pop Warner football team has ever done - qualified for the national championships. This time next week, the Wolves will play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl in sunny and warm - much warmer - Lake Buena Vista, Fla., at Disney World's Wide World of Sports complex just outside of Orlando. You don't have to remind them where they're going now. "We're going to Florida," City's Ja'Mieriea Woodard exclaimed while standing in front of the large City turnout of as estimated 200-300 people. Of course he smiled from ear to ear when he said it. "It's exciting because I've never been to Disney (World)," Aryuan Cain-Veasey said, "and I've always wanted to go." The Wolves (11-1) are three victories away from winning a coveted national championship. "I'm proud of the boys," coach Mike Iacovetti said, still wiping away some of the unfrozen tears with temperatures around 40 degrees. "I'm proud of the way they've worked. They've worked their little tails off. I'm proud to be a part of it. "It's something these kids will never forget." After emerging from the warmer locker room underneath the grandstands, tears had subsided slightly. But only because they flowed like a river in the confines of the locker room. Now it was hugs and handshakes of congratulations. "It's all about the kids," Iacovetti said. "We're so happy for them. We try to make a difference in their life. "We spend so much time with these kids. I look at them and I see 19 of my own kids. I don't think of any one of them differently than I do my own son. All the coaches feel the same way." Last week in the sub-regional in Indianapolis, the Wolves struggled to get anything going offensively. They didn't score until the final play of the first half, and that would be the only score of the game. So if the Wolves got out to another slow start, one couldn't blame them. Thanksgiving was this week, and with the prospect of going to Disney World within the kids' grasp, it would be easy for them to lose focus. It was so close they can taste it. But that was not as big of a problem as most would think. "Our theme this week was not Disney," said Scott Kaletha, an assistant coach and a longtime coach within the Pop Warner program at City. "It was to make history. "... With the backing we've just started getting from the community, it's overwhelming. I've been a part of Pop Warner for seven years, and for us to get here, and to finally make the pinnacle is something special. It's history. I'm just thankful that I get to be a part of it with those young men." Cain-Veasey put everybody at ease on the Wolves' first play from scrimmage. He took a pitch around the right edge and was never touched for a 67-yard touchdown with 7:20 left in the first quarter. To make it even easier on the Wolves, they scored again on the first play of their third drive with 44 seconds left in the first quarter. And it was Cain-Veasey finishing it off with a 41-yard touchdown, giving City a 14-0 lead. Cain-Veasey had himself a ballgame, rushing for 159 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a handful of tackles, including two key sacks. He picked up his third touchdown with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter from 8 yards out to seal the game. "That was it," Iacovetti said of the first touchdown. "That picked us right up. ... I never felt like we were in trouble. Once we got that first score I felt confident, and the boys were fired up. "They were seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. ... That took a lot of pressure off." That tunnel leads right to Disney World. "I always wanted to do something with my life," Cain-Veasey said, "and I heard about football, so I started playing football. ... I'm so excited." For Kaletha, this moment - this feeling - is a long time coming. Twice before has Kaletha gotten to this point as a coach but never gotten over the hump. "Third time's a charm," he said. ... "Finally!" Nationals begin Saturday and run through Dec. 12. The Wolves will be one of eight regional champion teams at the Division II Junior Pee Wee level to compete. Each team is guaranteed at least two games. Their first game is noon CST Saturday, and will play again at 8 a.m. CST Dec. 8. The national championship will be Dec. 11. "Not every 10-year-old kid has a chance to do this," Iacovetti said. Contact sports writer Nick Dettmann at ndettmann@thenewsdispatch.com or 874-7211, Ext. 447. |

WIMS reported that the PW kids are $5000 closer to their trip being paid for. Their goal is $15,000 overall, and they have received donations as big as $1000 from a couple of different people and organizations in town. I do know they are going to be at Buffalo Wild Wings tonight from 5 to 9 to try to raise some more money. BE THERE!

Looks like our game Saturday won't be seen online, I guess only one of the four fields down there is equipped to webcast a game and were not going to be playing on it Saturday, Bummer.

We just sent off to Florida a group of 4 players along with one of their older brothers, all their moms and two of their dads. They all crammed into one of those plain white 15 passenger Ford rental vans along with their luggage (no luggage rack on the roof), football gear, food, handheld video games, Ipods and CD's, etc. It was quite a site to behold. Good luck and be safe.

I'm currently watching the video feed of the West Bay Rams, CA VS. Stanley Blue Devils, NC game right now, It's killing me because you can see our boys playing on the other field but you can't tell what's going on.

Disney's video stream is just awful, no game announcers or nothing, just some PA guy that sounds like he's got rocks in his mouth, it's like the guy announces the play then 30 seconds later it's shown on the video. I swear, they must have Goofy operating the camera along with Chip 'n Dale at the control board. We should have either sent the Varcom sports guys or Michael and Parky down there. What a waste of $5.99.

AWESOME!!! WIMS is trying to get arrangements done to carry the next two games live on the radio. I don't know if the details will be able to get rectified or not, but I will keep you guys posted. Buck scored twice and Mason Kaletha scored on a keeper. The team is taking the rest of the day off in the Magic Kingdom. Well deserved! |
