Homey, not any real trick to it. It takes a while to get your eyes used to looking for them but usually after you find one, it's game on! I'm sure they're growing in Ruby Woods, I'd bet anything. That said, that's not my "spot" you aren't getting that, lol. They like woods that aren't too sunny, and often push up in sand floored forests like what we have around here. They can range in size from the size of a dime to the size of a coke can and vary in color from blonde to black to gray. Just go out and walk in circles looking at the ground. Oh yeah, they also grow well in orchards if you have access to any. Sometimes they're around the base of poplar and elm trees. G'luck!

JHeath, I could convert you. These things are amazingly tasty. Super rare too, anywhere from $25 -$50 a pound! This place sells them at $39/lb

LBL, they're all around us in the woods. When I say "us" I'm talking about Michigan City. Go to the Shirley Heinz land trust area over on the east side of town, I know for a fact they grow back there, I've picked them back there. I'm sure they're growing in Ruby woods too.
The past two days, I've been going out there with my dogs. My old dog looks around on the ground like he's looking for them and the pup doesn't know what we're up to but thinks that it's a game. |

This is what I did with that batch. Fresh asperagus, with homemade wine pasta and a garlic cream sauce.
