Coast guard open house planned

MICHIGAN CITY | In conjunction with National Safe Boating Week, the United States Coast Guard Station Michigan City is holding a public open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22. The Coast Guard will be joined by the Michigan City Fire Department, the Indiana Department of Natural resources, and the New Buffalo Police department. Learn about water safety and how the Coast Guard, DNR, police, and Fire Departments save lives and work for you to improve your safety on the water.

There will be tours of the Coast Guard boats and a HH-65 Rescue Helicopter. The Michigan City Fire Department will have a fire truck on display and equipment from the New Buffalo Police department, and DNR, will be available for viewing. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide water safety and boating information.

At 2 p.m. watch a training operation, unitizing the Coast Guard boats and the Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter, off the Michigan City light house pier. There will be hands-on activities such as throwing a rescue line or standing at the helm of the Coast Guard 47-foot motor life boat or the 25-foot response boat. View some of the safety equipment the men and women of the USCG use when they respond to incidents on the water.
