Got this info with my water bill this week and thought it was some good tips to pass along. Nobody ever wants to come home to a flooded basement due to a frozen pipe burst.

Helpful Suggestions to Our Water Customers:

As we prepare our Department for winter you should consider doing the same for your home.

If you spend winter months away from your home located here in Northern Indiana, to some much warmer areas of the country, here are some helpful suggestions.

You may want to consider having the water turned off to or in your home. Should we have a cold snap and your house loses power your furnace will no longer keep your home heated and your pipes could freeze. Once the heat is restored and the ice in the pipe thaws you may have water where it is not wanted.

If we turn water off at the street there is a service charge of $15.00 and that will apply when the water is then turned back on. When we turn off the water at the street we will need to remove the meter from the house, and a final bill will be sent. Should you decide to just turn the water off to the house at the meter yourself, there are no service charges and monthly billing will continue.

Normally, the water meter is located in the basement of the home. In an attempt to save power and energy cost, people keep their basement cooler or in some cases turn the heat off down there entirely. Please keep in mind the risk of frozen water pipes; you should keep some heat in the basement area. Another thing to do is make sure all windows are closed and sealed to prevent the cold air from entering the basement area.

If you receive a water bill and want it forwarded to your winter address, please provide that information to us or sign up for online billing at:

http://www.emichigancity.com/cityhall/depa...water/index.htm. The US Postal Service does not forward our bills. This will prevent you from becoming late in your payments and perhaps having the water disconnected, resulting in additional fees.

Our office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except for scheduled holidays, and our customer service representatives can be reached at 219-874-3228.

We hope these suggestions will help you in your decisions. Thank you and enjoy the season to come!
