WESTVILLE — A former businessman is making his bid for the Republican nomination for the 3rd District county commissioner seat.

Ron Kniola of Westville said he wants to continue the legacy of outgoing 3rd District Commissioner Ken Layton while disseminating a business-friendly environment with a conservative Republican approach.

“As a former business owner, I can bring a plethora of experience relative to attracting business and job creation,” he said in a press release. “While serving on the city council (in Michigan City) and Michigan City Port Authority Board of Directors for 20 years, I have worked with the intricacies of government services and the need to keep expenses at an absolute minimum.”

He said his leadership requisites are demonstrated by his leadership roles in every organization he’s participated in, both in the public and private sectors.

He was the past president of the Michigan City Rotary International, Michigan City Common Council, Michigan City Port Authority and was a founder of the Trail Creek/La Porte Watershed Committee.

“I think, as probably most candidates would voice, job creation is the number one issue facing the county,” he said during a phone interview, “so we need to take heed on the most critical things to welcome new industry into the area.”

He was the owner of Kniola Insurance Agency/New York Life and Kniola’s Meating Place. He was also the general manager of S&K Menswear and the sales manager of Riggs Outdoor Power Equipment.

And he taught at St. Stanislaus School in Michigan City.

“I’ve been out of politics for 12 years and I feel, since my career is over, I have the time to devote to the commissioner job,” he said, “which is pretty much a full-time operation. It takes a lot of time and energy and I’m now in a position to provide that.”
