QUOTE Westbound I-94, just west of Chesterton, re-opened at 7:14 a.m. CDT Tuesday, after being diverted at the Michigan City/U.S. 421 exit while cattle and a wrecked semi were removed. Related Content At 11:53 p.m. Monday, a two-semi crash just west of Chesterton caused the highway to be shut down completely, according to Indiana State Police. A cattle hauler semi driver, David Moss of Holland, Mich., told police he was talking on his CB when his semi hit the rear of a semi box trailer driven by Zhan Hua Dong of Scarborough, Ontario. The collision caused Moss’ semi to erupt in flames on the passenger side. He dove out the driver’s window. The fire caused the ties to explode, which blew of the bottom of the aluminum cattle hauler. Seven of 34 cattle escaped onto the interstate. Moss and ISP troopers spent the night keeping cattle contained until another cattle hauler could load the surviving cattle. Sixteen cattle survived. Eighteen cattle were killed in the accident. The carcasses will be taken to a local landfill. Moss was not injured, but his tractor and trailer were a total loss. He was en route to Milwaukee, Wis., when the crash occurred. Police cited Moss for following too closely. |
