Wall Gang Discussing Meeting Hall

Jason Miller
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - The Wall Gang is in talks to build a headquarters for its veterans organization on Michigan City's west side, but members first will have to jump through a few municipal hoops.

"I'm very optimistic we'll get it done," said O. Jerrold Winski, a Michigan City attorney who is representing the group in its attempt to build near Moore's Auto Repair on the city's west side. "We've got three things going on at once."

The Wall Gang, a veteran's motorcycle group known for its philanthropy, purchased a parcel of property near Green and Chicago streets in the hope of building a conference center and meeting hall for the group.

Steve "Headdog" Moore is the group's leader, and the property sits across Chicago Street from his business, Moore's Auto Repair and Towing. The group purchased the plot during a delinquent tax sale.

While the purchase came off without problems, the group has to tie up a few loose ends dealing with zoning and city rights-of-way. Winski will appear before the city council on Tuesday to request the city vacate a dedicated road that passes directly through the plot.

He also must ask the board of zoning appeals to change the zoning on the parcel from M-2 manufacturing to commercial.

The road in question isn't used and hasn't been maintained, but must be vacated, nonetheless.

"There are certain clean-up items we have to take care of, like making sure a judge wipes out all prior liens (which is required when purchasing a property at a tax sale)," Winski said.

Winski said a water main underneath the dedicated road will remain, but the Wall Gang doesn't plan to build any permanent structures over the water line. He said the group hopes to put up a temporary tent-like structure so it can hold gatherings this summer with plans to build a conference center/meeting structure in the near future.

"We've got a little bit of legalities to go through," Moore said. "But things are getting done."

Street To Be Vacated For The Wall Gang
City Council approves move to help local veteran’s group construct building on property.

Jason Miller
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - The City Council agreed Tuesday night to move forward a local veterans club's petition requesting the vacation of a little used street.

The council will hold a public hearing on the vacation of State Court on Tuesday, July 15. The small street and intersecting alley haven't been used in 50 years and are needed so The Wall Gang can build a common building on the property.

The veteran's group of motorcycle enthusiasts purchased the property that is intersected by the alley - at Green and Chicago streets - through a delinquent tax sale.

Attorney Jerrold O. Winski asked the request be put on the agenda for first reading at the council's July 1 meeting. Council president Ron Meer said he'd look into that possibility.

Winski said the property would be the eventual home for a meeting and conference-type building, with the remaining green space made available to neighbors.

Wall Gang HQ breaks ground

Laurie Wink
The News-Dispatch

Land donated to group to be 'an asset to the neighborhood,' official says.

MICHIGAN CITY - The number of gold shovels used at the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Wall Gang headquarters Wednesday showed that a lot of community and county efforts made the event possible.

Steve "Headdog" Moore, president of the Wall Gang, hosted the ceremony at 911 Chicago St. and paid tribute to a number of key players.

"Late in 2005, the Wall Gang had a dream to have a headquarters of its own," Moore said. "In February 2006, thanks to the La Porte County Commission, we got this property donated to us."

County Commission President Bill Hager said when the county took ownership of the parcel as the result of a tax lien, it was a junkyard full of weeds. County Council President Mark Yagelski found the property and asked if the commissioners would donate it to the Wall Gang.

"They're getting it cleaned up and built up so it's really an asset to the neighborhood," Hager said.

Moore said construction will be done in four phases, as funds become available.

The first phase to get under way will be a picnic shelter. Within three years, the Wall Gang plans to have a headquarters building with an office, and banquet facilities that can be rented out to community groups.

"With the building, we hope to improve the quality of support we give to all veterans in La Porte County," Moore said.

The Wall Gang is a non-profit organization that assists individual veterans and veterans' causes. The group has been meeting in the American Legion Post 37 on U.S. 20.

Moore said funding for the headquarters project is coming from grants, donations, sponsorships and two annual fund raisers. He credited McGilla Buildings, Ray's Excavating and Tonn & Blank for contributions of materials and labor. Joe Coar, of Tonn & Blank, said it was easy to support the Wall Gang's effort.

"Their mission is to help veterans and the gift they bring to La Porte County - how can you put a price tag on it," Coar said. "Number one, it's deserved, and number two, they need it."
