City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City Sports _ Benefits of being the Michigan City Wolves High School football coach

I've been brainstorming the blessings of coaching the Michigan City Wolves High School football team. Can anybody name a few more?

That is a great list.

#1 on my list would be the chance to be the center of attention in a town starving for something to be excited about. Don't forget it was only a year and a half ago 10,000 people packed into Ames Field for Homecoming. If you win in this town, you will own it.

I've been brainstorming the blessings of coaching the Michigan City Wolves High School football team. Can anybody name a few more?

Here's what I initially came up with just off the top of my head:
  • Home stadium is beautiful Ames Field, underwent a fairly recent complete $6 million dollar reconstruction project when Elston and Rogers consolidated in 1995. Ames Field even has an elevator going up to the press box
  • Ames Field added field turf in 2009 at a price tag of $750,000
  • High School Football deep in tradition at Michigan City
  • Michigan City High school football programs were established in 1919 at former Michigan City Elston Red Devil High School by Andy Gill, Football Field at now Elston Middle School is named after coach Gill, coach Gill had his ashes spread on football field in 1947, member of Indiana Football Hall of Fame
  • Most notable Michigan City football alumni with connections to NFL include include former Chicago Bears head coach Abe Gibron, Super Bowl V Champion Baltimore Colts Running Back Tom Nowatzke who scored winning touchdown for Colts in Super Bowl, Michgan City Elston Red Devil Graduate and Indiana football Hall of Famer Tony Cline Defensive End played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers in the 1960s', was NFL all-pro as a rookie, Elston grad Donnie Thomas played in the NFL for the New England Patriots in the mid 1970's
  • College football coaching great and former San Francisco 49er assistant coach Dick Tomey is a Michigan City Elston graduate
  • In more recent times, Michigan City Wolves football graduate Steve Farmer played in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings organization. Michigan City Wolves High School gratuate Ashley Edinger was the 2001 NFL Gatorade Pass Punt and kick national champion and received national attention for Michigan City during halftime during 2001 Baltimore Ravens - Oakland Raiders AFC championship game, attendend Purdue University and now head girls volleyball coach at nearby New Prairie High School
  • Recent national championship Pop Warner teams were filmed by ESPN and NFL Films at the Pop Warner Super Bowl past two seasons
  • Dave Parry, who just passed away, longtime NFL official, Big Ten Conference head Official and NCAA officials national coordinator, officiated in Super Bowl XVII and son is current NFL referee, all call Michigan City home
  • University of Notre Dame football coaching legend Joe Yonto was once High School football coach at St. Mary's Catholic High School now known as Marquette Catholic High School. Coach Yonto married into family from Michigan City
  • Ryan Isaac, Current Purdue Boilermaker defensive end is a 2010 Michigan City High School grad
  • 2010 Michgan City Wolves graduate running back Adam Harmon was the one of the leading rushers for the victorious north squad in the 2010 Grange Insurance Indiana High School North-South All-Star football Classic in Indianapolis, Ryan Isaac also played in game representing Michigan City
  • 2011 Michigan City High School graduate Dustin Rivich was named to the Associated Press All Academic team as a punter and will be attending the Air Force Academy
  • Michigan City plays hosts to major college teams such as USC, Boston College, Stanford, Purdue, Navy and many others day prior to playing Notre Dame, teams lease Ames Field for workout, stays at local hotel and dines at local restaurant, having such close contacts with those major colleges are invaluable for a high school coach exclusive to Michigan City
  • Intense media coverage
  • All games are broadcast live on radio on Michigan City 1420 AM WIMS radio and streamed live and archived online worldwide at www.wimsradio.com
  • Some games also broadcast live on radio and online worldwide by Regional Radio Sports Network and 96-7 The Eagle in La Porte and streamed worldwide online at regionsports.com and midamericabroadcasting.com

  • Legendary Indiana High School football coach Craig Buzea was recently the head coach of the Michigan City Wolves, chance to show up Buzea
  • Michigan City Wolves football is extenslivly covered in the Michigan City News Dispatch and La Porte County Herald-Argus daily local newspapers and websites, sports editor Adam Parkhouse is very respected sports journalist in state of Indiana among fellow sportswriters
  • Some games also covered in The Times, Post-Tribune, South Bend Tribune newspapers and websites

  • Michigan City is in the Chicagoland Metropolitan Area and only 30 Miles from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana
  • Michigan City Wolves Pop Warner Teams are a current dynasty winning the 2010 Division II Jr. Pee Wee Pop Warner Super Bowl National championship going 17-0 in season and outscoring opponents 444-48, never trailed any opponent all season
  • Michigan City Wolves Division II Jr. Pee Wee Pop Warner Team finished 3rd in the nation at the 2009 Pop Warner Super Bowl and were named sportsmanship award winners

You are right on with your list and I can't agree with you more on each and every one of them. We have a lot to offer to any deserving coach. I hope we get one sooner than later. Time is of the essence right now but let's get a good fit for us. These players are very coachable and I am proud how they have come together to keep the team close. I think they have come to realize that they are the important factor in the results out on the field. They know they have to be ready for whomever shall take on the position. GO WOLVES !!!

It is a beautiful stadium. I have been in stadiums throughout the state and the only one that was equal in class has been Carmel. Merrillville is nice but very plain. Size is not everything !!!

Ames Field is ascetically beautiful, and cathedral like you almost can get a feel of what it was like when the Bears used to play at Wrigley Field. I've attended games down in Carmel on three different occasions, been to Merrillville more times than I'd like to admit. Merrillville's Demeree stadium is 1000% far superior for a variety of reasons.

Here's one I added to the list, never forget time I was at a Portage sectional game at East Chicago, Portage kid got laid out, kid laid motionless out on the field about 45 minutes before the ambulance showed up, kid was OK but rest of Portage - East Chicago series became a constant home game for Portage after that, many other schools it's the same way as East Chicago.

-Michigan City Area schools have it's own team doctor from St. Anthony Medical Center nearby Ames Field in Michigan City and certified team athletic trainers on staff and EMS, fire and police at games.

I know because of what happens on the field, Ames doesn't get a lot of press, but I can tell you it is one of the best facilities in NWI for sure. It is awesome from top to bottom.

There have been colleges come to visit Ames Field because they are building new stadiums and want to fashion it after ours.

Especially now that they added the field turf, Ames is as good, or better than, many small college facilities

Posted by: Ang May 31 2011, 01:09 PM

Yep. A team from Iowa (Iowa Central U) used the facility once while I was the athl. secretary to run/stretch while they were here to play against Valpo. The AD from that school told me our high school stadium was much nicer than their college stadium.

Yes it is and the visiting teams for Notre Dame stay at our hotel in town as well. I know some of them use the field if they get in early enough on Friday or have a late game on Saturday. Glad we could provide them with a nice facility. I hope the school system power washes the seating area before the fall because it needs it.

Carmel's press box remains the most amazing high school press box I've ever been in. It was beyond awesome. It's much, much, much better than Merrillville's. As far the rest of the stadium, I'd probably still go with Carmel. But DeMaree is very nice.

I just remember being down there for the La Porte Slicer - Carmel Geryhound Northern Semi-State game in 2006 with Carmel leading 38-0 and 8:00 still remaining in regulation Carmel PA announcer began making announcements for state championship ticket and T-shirt sales information and repeated the announcement three times. On the way in Carmel fans wanted to know if we realized that we didn't travel down to see a baseball game. Always enjoy going to Merrillville for every sporting event, Mrs. Janis Qualizza run a very tight Pirate ship.

From what I understand, that is pretty much how everything is down there.

Found this highlight video on Hulu from Super Bowl V in 1971. Elston's Tom Nowatzke's game tying touchdown run is shown at 14:20 of the piece. Talk about old school, the goal post was still along the goal line of the end zone in those days.

I like the tune NFL films has overdubbed on Nowatzke's touchdown run "What Shall We Do with The Drunkin' Sailor". biggrin.gif

I just learned that Elston's Gill field was the training camp home of the NFL's Chicago Cardinals in 1936.

I would like to find a picture of the old ames field before the remodel. The kids don't realize how nice the stadium is now compared to the old one.

I found this unbelievable that in 1956 the Michigan City White Caps minor league baseball team drew Ames Field crowd of 48,765, Michigan City also had a 30,000 seat boxing stadium called the "Sky Blue Arena" on 2nd Street. Where the heck did everybody park for these events?

Baseball in Michigan City, Indiana

Overview

The record of the Midwest League franchise in Michigan City, Indiana.

The League first reached Indiana in 1956, at Michigan City. Oh, to follow a Giants' farm club in the fifties....

Michigan City had few fans, and only limited success. But the Giants sent Manny Mota, Jose Tartabull, and Matty Alou.

And Marichal. The greatest of these is Marichal.

Michigan City joined the Midwest League in 1956. This team was the direct successor of the Hannibal franchise. The franchise failed after the 1959 season and was not replaced. (Although two new franchises joined the league in 1960, neither replaced the teams which folded during the off-season. This is best viewed as a failed expansion attempt.)

I find 48,000 REALLY hard to believe. That just can't be right. Right?

Ask one of the school board members, they were probably in attendance.

I read that 48k as the total attendance for all of 1956.

That sounds more believeable, still can't imagine being among a sellout crowd of 30,000 at the former Sky Blue Arena in the 1920's.

Thanks for posting that google link Tax. That was amazing. I so enjoy looking at old photos of MC. If you can find any info or pics on Smith Bros. that would be so totally cool....My Great Grandfather was the plant manager there. It was the first place he worked when he got home from WWI, and it was also the first job my Grandfather (who is 91 and still ornery as he!!) got when he returned from WWII--only he worked in the boiler room until he finished his bookkeepers training and went to work for the railroad--Guess who got him the job? wacko.gif

My favorite photo is on page 87 above the 1907 Michigan City football team. It's the 1907 Michigan City Elston High School girls basketball team. I should suggest to coach Megyese that for the home game against La Porte this season that the Lady Wolves wear 1907 throwback uniforms, that should really draw a crowd to the Wolves Den. laugh.gif
