City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City Living _ The MC quiz thread

So to try something different, how about a perpetual quiz thread? I am thinking we have a question out there, then whoever answers it gets to ask the next question.

I'll start it off...

What is the first street south of the numbered streets?

Without looking at a map, I'm going to guess Detriot Street, which intestects with Franklin just south of 11th (near the Moose Lodge and the BP station).

I agree with JHeath, but I know that doesn't mean I get to ask the next question. sad.gif

'Tween 11th and 10th on Franklin?

Posted by: Ang Jun 18 2008, 10:03 AM

I think SSder said the rules were that the FIRST person to answer correctly gets to ask the next question.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jun 18 2008, 11:16 AM

Yes, I think SSider did. So Ang gets to ask, and the M&M question has to be put aside. I think it was Winston Churchill who put it best: Until Tim is the next, first-correct responder, his question is relegated to the ash heap of this message board.

Posted by: Tim Jun 19 2008, 02:34 AM

Are we taking guesses as actually winning entries? If so, IHeath gets to ask the next question. I'll withdraw mine until the proper time.

In order to avoid confusion, let us agree to stop using punctuation when answering in this thread.

Marquette Mall opened in 1967.

I remember a girl who lived near us and I went to the mall when it was being built. We'd heard about it, but never having been in that type of mall, we figured it was going to be a glorified Park N' Shop. The store were built - they all had naked mannequins in the front window areas - we just walked through there like we'd landed on the moon - we were going to be like the Jetsons!

Let's go back to my M&M question - anyone?

I agree, Roger. But I did go look up that thread. Not being quite as "seasoned" as some others, I'm questionning the locale. I thought there was a barbershop there. In fact, wasn't that Lou Esper's place?

M&M was in fact where Lou Espar's barber shop is/was. My mom used to take me and my sister there when we were kids - must have been the late 50's.

- your question?

Posted by: CaddyRich Jun 27 2008, 12:15 PM

Ok...here's an easy one...

Name the NFL quarterback who was a spokesman for Jaymar-Ruby in the 70's...His line at the end of every TV ad was, "Sansabelt Slacks...From Jaymar-Ruby Corporation in Michigan City, Indiana."

Wow - I didn't even know there were Sansabelt TV ads back then! THerefore, no freaking idea!

Posted by: Marram Jun 27 2008, 10:53 PM

I don't know if you can be older than Namath and be in the '70's. In fact, Namath's glory years were in '67 through '69, with an improbable SuperBowl win in at the end of the '68 season (in '69).

So if he's older than Namath but in the '70's, I'm thinking Johnny U, Lamonica, or George Blanda.

I admit doing some research to try to find the answer. Heck, research should be rewarded, not frowned upon. Whilst doing my due diligence, I came upon the following:

from http://www.allbusiness.com/north-america/united-states-indiana/107205-1.html

QUOTE
The firm had introduced the now-famous brand of Jaymar slacks in 1950. Business took off in 1959, when the company began to advertise its Sansabelt slacks, introduced in 1957, on network television...

The new advertising campaign... will mark a new era for Jaymar-Ruby, a company that has piled up an impressive list of industry "firsts" in its eight-decade history. Jaymar-Ruby was the first: . To introduce the zipper closure in men's slacks; . To offer change pockets on the inside front pocket; . To use the hook-and-eye closure on men's slacks; . To pioneer the Sansabelt slack concept; . To incorporate a no-roll waistband in its product lines; . To offer many of the man-made fibers in its slacks; . To air coast-to-coast local retailer cut-in commercials on television; and . To operate a fully computerized spreading, marking, sizing and cutting system in the industry.

And I also ran into this little ditty written by a MC transplant who casts a rather cynical eye toward our fair city:

http://chinesebroccoli.org/2008/01/the_truth_about_chicken_city.html

QUOTE
At some point the semi-lost-soul-Hoosier/part-time-Chicagoan town decided a bit of economic stimulation was needed, so they accepted a bid for one of the country's first outlet malls to be built over by the NIPSCO plant (not a "nuke-ular" plant, though it looks the same as one) and the Jaymar Ruby Sans-a-Belt slacks factory. The outlet mall boasted startling new brand names the likes of which 46360 had never seen before, like Benneton. City folk made Michigan City more of a destination and the mall back by the highway started to fail. Soon the novelty gift store, the creepy hidden video arcade, the Claire's Boutiques, B. Dalton, and the corn dog stand would all be gone. Today the anchor stores are still there (Sears, Carson Pirie-Scott, and JC Penney's) but the bulk of Marquette Mall is abandoned save for an oversized Hallmark shop, a 365-days-a-year Christmas store, and a couple of cell phone stands. I tried to buy shoelaces there this past weekend, just to see if I could, and despite the two or three extant shoe stores, I had to go across the parking lot to Walgreen's...

I had my first swim lessons and my first positive day camp experiences at the Michigan City YMCA down on Coolspring. I was in Polliwogs or Guppies or Silverfish or whatever and have been, as a result of this place, a swimmer my whole life. I also had a gymnastics class here where the instructor, no doubt fourteen though I'm sure I thought she was ancient, was so mad at me once she insisted smoke would come out of her ears. I was terrified. I had a swim at the Michigan City Y just last year and I don't think the locker room had been updated or even cleaned since I was a Polliwog. The pool was fairly disgusting too. Yesterday they had their YMCA charter revoked...

A million other things happened and disappeared here too: Fried's Cat Shelter, whose name became more than ironic when the entire thing was destroyed by fire, the Franklin Pharmacy whose animated neon mortar-and-pestle are now echoed bizarrely in the modern logo of the newly erected Walgreens across the street, the crazy-arc architecture of Al's Grocery Store that became Frank's Nursery and Crafts that became Goodwill that became, I think, abandoned, the hobbit-renovated brick brewery on 8th street that nature has nearly fully reclaimed, the strip mall that came and went at Lake Shore Drive and Lake, the Hot'n'Now burger drive-thru that is now a delicious low-rent Mexican joint. ..

Wherefore art thou, weird old timey Michigan City? Not to worry, the world's most angularly modern library is still thriving, the creepy observation tower still looms atop the depressing zoo, the dunes still roll even in the shadows of teetering apartment developments, and yes, most importantly, the electric trains from Chicago still go right down the middle of the street.

I would have never found those articles had I just used my memory (and the memories of a ten-year-old at that).

That's ambiguous, but hints are supposed to be, so here goes.

First off, a quick comment: Montana was the best NFL quarterback to come out of Notre Dame, but his ND career was not as good or only as good as a handfull of others, including Tony Rice, Quinn, McDougal, Clements, Bertelli, and Lujack.

Then, you said "before" the best QB, so you either mean before Montana at ND, which would be Theismann, Clements, Slager, or Lisch; or you mean before Montanta at San Fran, which the web tells me would be either Brodie, Steve Spurrier, Plunkett, or Deberg.

One of those has got to be right.

As much as I would like to question the careers of a couple of names on the ND list in comparison to Joe Montana's...this is America, and that could be a topic for another time. rolleyes.gif

QUOTE
December 28, 1946: American Airlines Flight 2007, a Douglas C-50, routing Detroit-Chicago crashed near Michigan City, IN after an emergency divert to South Bend after the pilot reported problems with both engines. The plane crash-landed near Michigan City. Of the 21 occupants on board (18 passengers and 3 crew) 2 of the crew were killed. The cause of the crash was determined to be fuel starvation in both engines.

Where in Michigan City did it crash?

Posted by: Tim Jun 30 2008, 04:23 PM

Can I make a suggestion? Maybe this quiz would be more fun if we just asked each other about stuff we remember, rather than testing each other's internet detective skills. For instance, the air crash question - since no one who posts here was alive then, why would anyone know that? It's a good question - I just think we'd have more fun with questions like this -

There used to be a cafe on 8th St. What was it called?

Just my opinion on the quiz parameters, of course....

Alright, the answer is actually not on the internet, although the details I displayed came from the website websited (there's a new one - "websited"). I got the answer from memory, and from a guided tour of Friendship Gardens, which was the answer, BTW. Not on the pond or in one of the rose gardens, but on a ridge on the boundaries of the park.

So here's one to take its place since no one responded to the first.

[two cents]Since that wasn't a specific location (afterall 8th street covers a lot of ground) I'm going assume you mean on the corner of 8th and Franklin. There's been a couple restaurants there. In the interest of not dragging this out too much, the answer is: on the north side of the 1500th block of East 8th Street, about one and a half blocks from Memorial Park.

So, next question:

Name the last ten mayors of MC (bonus: in order).

Yeah, but then it goes from what do we remember to who can Google the fastest - and what fun is that?

Here's what I remember -

Francis Fedder
Randall C. Miller
Conrad Kominarek
Joe LaRocco
???
Sheila
Chuck O.

Maybe someone can fill in the blanks....

You can't google those ten: I tried.

You guys are missing an "A" for sure. I think a "V" too. I'll stop by City Hall and make sure I give y'all the definitive list tomorrow.

That takes us back a long way... To the 50's if my math is right. I think that is pretty impressive for the mostly Gen-X crowd we have around these parts. Once we get answers we should put a post up on the MC Wiki page with the list of mayors. Its kind of a shame that it isn't on there currently.

That's a good idea. You should know there is someone else (Xenophon777) editing there who keeps shooting me (2lakes) down. He didn't like it when I listed Mayor Krueger under "Famous People From Michigan City," and then to appease that person, I created a category called "Leading Citizens of Michigan City," with which he also disagreed. Take a look at the "discussion" and "history" tabs at the top of the page and you'll see what I mean.

Still, you're right. I could bring the entire list (all of our mayors), and I think we should try to post it.

My question: As a young boy, Mayor Krueger saw which President?

I'll check for answers this afternoon.

I see you guys did some research on Xeno. I knew I forgot something today: to get down to City Hall and copy all the mayors and their terms: sorry. I'll make it a point to do that during my free time tomorrow.

Ang, Abraham Lincoln is correct. Check out the following from the library website, http://www.mclib.org/moments.htm#boys, (MOMENTS TO REMEMBER was written by Bob Kaser. Information used in the articles came from files of The News-Dispatch and from historical material compiled by Edna Kitchell, Michigan City historian.)

QUOTE
A Boy's Encounter With History
'In Utter Awe, He Stood and Stared'

It was raining in Michigan City on May 1, 1865. But boys, like flowers, thrive on rain. And 10-year-old Martin was no exception. He and his buddies all had been born in Germany and, with their parents, emigrated to the United States. Although in this country only a half-year, the boys had found summer jobs helping farmers plant potatoes.

This first day of May, they were puddle-jumping their way to one of the farms and were about a mile outside Michigan City when they were stopped short by the sound of cannons booming.

Boys don't always keep too well-posted on current events, least of all boys who are in a new country where they neither speak nor read the language. So, to Martin, there was only one likely explanation for the booms:

"The Confederates are attacking Michigan City!"

Like Martin, his friends were not aware the Civil War had ended. They accepted his explanation and joined him in typical boyish reaction to the "danger." They ran right for it.

To their probable chagrin, there were no grey-coated soldiers advancing along Franklin Street. Instead, there were hundreds of somber, but obviously excited, local citizens dressed in their Sunday finest. Martin and his pals followed the crowd - and found themselves at the Michigan Central railroad station.

There, to the boys puzzlement, people were patiently waiting in a long line to board a Monon train halted beneath successions of evergreen-decorated arches which had not been there the last time the boys came to the north end of town.

A curious boy is as restless as a chainsmoker at a double-feature. The only solution, obviously, was to board the train and seek out the cause of the excitement. So Martin got in line. When he reached the steps of the railroad car and started to ascend them, he was rebuffed by a uniformed guard. "No kids allowed without parents," he was told.

Now, telling a 10-year-old boy to stay out of somewhere is about as effective as asking a Soviet politician to cross his heart. A few moments later an elderly couple boarded the train. The woman wore a huge hoop skirt which, unknown to her, concealed a little boy. Once on the train, Martin emerged from his hiding place and trailed closely behind the couple. To the officials they passed, he was evidently their son. Finally, after moments of suspenseful expectation, Martin came upon the source of the excitement.

He was just 10 years old and only six months in America, but Martin was immediately aware of the significant sight before him. In utter awe, he stood and stared - and held up the long line of people. Then the spell was broken effectively--Martin was grabbed by the seat of the pants and the collar, marched forcefully to the end of the train, and dumped into a sandburr patch. As the little German immigrant glared back at the soldier on the train platform, he could little guess the events his future held in store.

But years later, when Martin Theodore Krueger grew up and served six terms as mayor of Michigan City and four terms as a state legislator, it's highly likely that his thoughts often returned to that day - May 1, 1865 - when the train carrying the body of President Abraham Lincoln paused here on its 1,662 mile journey from Washington to Springfield, Illinois.

Ang's question...

Here's the official list of our Mayors (at least the last 10 individuals). Mr. Fedder (son and grandson of two men on this list) and the ladies at the City Clerk's Office were very helpful and even provided a printout which listed them in order.

According to my count, there were 38 separate people who served as mayor, strarting with Willys Peck in 1836. And our last 10 have been:

C. Oberlie, 7/1/03 - present
S. Brillson, 1/1/96 - 6/30/03
R. J. Behler, Jr., 1/1/88 - 12/31/95
C. D. Arnold, 1/1/80 - 12/31/87
J. R. LaRocco, 1/1/76 - 12/31/79
R. C. Miller, 1/1/72 - 12/31/75
C. S. Kominiarek, 1/1/68 - 12/31/71
R. C. Miller, 1/1/64 - 12/31/67
F. G. Fedder, 1/1/56 - 12/31/63
R. Hileman, 1/1/48 - 12/31/55
R. C. Fedder, 1/1/43 - 12/31/47 (term extended by the IN legislature to a fifth year due to WWII)

When I have a bit more time, I will type the rest out if anyone is interested. Other names that I recognized included Fred Parker, Martin Krueger, Walter Vail, John Barker, and George Ames. If we submit this to Wikipedia, perhaps we can have it linked to as a separate page since it would end up being a pretty long list.

A sidebar on the mayor discussion - in the fall of '63 when my dad was running against Frannie Fedder the REpulican party made some shopping bags with the names of all the candidates listed on the side. We lived in Edgewood, and on Halloween we went trick-or-treating - we used those shopping bags for our treats- and ended up at Fedder's house! He lived on Coolspring in a house shaped like a barn around Cleveland. We had no idea who he was - but I remember whoever came to the door made some kind of good-natured comment as to how they shouldn't give us anything because of those bags. We got home and told my dad about it - he got a BIG kick out of it. biggrin.gif

Johnson Van Dyke Grigsby...

Actually, I think he returned to prison, after committing another crime which he claimed he did in order to go back. My father used to prosecute the cases that came out of the prison, and he would always talk about how the prison was a "city inside a city."

163-3 If the official Questioner does not ask the Official Question within 24 hours of being passed the conch, then the conch is deemed in limbo and the passer of the conch retains the right to ask another question. Having become the Questioner, that person is then subject to this rule as well, with the conch reverting back to the previous Questioner after another 24 hours.

If there are no objections, Roger is hereby on the clock...

I'd give it 48 hours - some of us aren't here every day - though obviously I am. biggrin.gif

I say give Roger till noon on Monday. Yeah, I know it sucks to have to wait that long. I'm chomping at the bit, too, but it IS the weekend and maybe he went out of town or something. If he posts no trivia by noon on Monday, then Marram gets to ask another question.

Fair?

How's this - THIS time Roger gets until Monday - but after that we instate the 48 hour rule.

I'd say that's a pretty fair compromise - especially seeing as how I'm usually a complete XXXhole about this stuff.

There was a story about him in the ND some time ago, and they discussed his work with the Navy, I think, during the war, and his involvement in developing television transmission technology. I am sure Wikipaedia has somehting. My father was an engineer and worked on power transmission lines in Thailand.

Here's more of a little known fact-type question:
The five Michigan city Fire Houses are dedicated/memorialized for what reason?

This must be a trick question, as Michigan City has but 4 Fire Houses.

Oh, yeah cause they didn't redo the Blvd/Carroll Ave station, right? Or was it Central?

OK OK OK! Four fire houses and the Training station...to whom were they memorialized? Not the names, the reason? (Names would be an insane amount of bonus points!)

So it has been a while, so let's try a photo trivia question...

Where am I at, and what is this object for?

No more ideas? Here is a hint, look at the color of the seat and the other part in the background. It could be a giveaway as to what business I am at.

Posted by: Ang May 15 2009, 10:05 AM

It looks like a trash can and a recycle bin in the background. I would say Waste Management, but that thing on the bench confounds me.

Final answer...

I am at Carlsons, and this is the device that is used to open the paper containers that the hotdogs are placed in before being delivered to hungry people like me!

Another picture quiz! Where was I?

Appears very much to be at the Michigan City Zoo, walking up the 'path' that goes from behind the camel's paddock and wends its way, eventually, up to Monkey Island.

At the zoo heading to the Tower?

Posted by: southsider2k9 Jul 27 2009, 09:25 AM

It is one of the paths that lead up to the zoo tower. It is the one to the far east, that goes by what are the camel and ostrich, and kangaroo pens now.

Michigan City resident Chauncey Blair, in 1860, sold 102 acres of land to the State Of Indiana, for the prison site. Price: $4,500.00. It was originally known as Prison North to distinguish it from Prison South (the first Indiana state prison) which was in Jeffersonville.

Did I ask this one?

In the 70's there was a "hippie" store on Franklin St. It had a big JEANS $3.75 sign painted in the window and sold hideous cheap clothing and head supplies. What was it called?

Fat Daddies was the store - but it was not at Barker and Franklin.

But you are correct!

Bonus question - what was the more ethnically oriented store next to Fat Daddies?

Weren't there three eateries that shared the name Brown? (Owned by George Brown, I think?) Brownie's Grill in the South Side Park n' Shop, Brown's Griddle, by courthouse, and another Brown's on Michigan Blvd. Just a guess, of course. :-)

Holy smokes! A slam-dunk win! My dad's original Miller Tax & Accounting office was behind the Brown's Grill by the courthouse. I must have been 3 or 4, but I can remember my dad taking through the kitchen, which somehow connected to his office, and sitting at the counter. We also have pics somewhere of my dad standing in front of Brownie's at the Park N Shop right after the '57 blizzard.

Impressive win!

If feel like I've asked these questions on a different thread. Can't find it, so -

Where could the slogan "If you can't stop, smile as you go by." be seen in MC?

The store next to Fat Daddies was Calico Horse.

The west entrance to MC on US 20.

"If you can't stop, smile as you go by" was the slogan for Sid's Pure Oil gas station at the corner of Greenwood Ave and Franklin Street.
