MICHIGAN CITY | Three teenagers were charged recently with carjacking a woman last month and then running from police when officers stopped the stolen car, police said.

The woman called police after her car was taken from her Nov. 19 near the 1200 block of East Michigan Boulevard in Michigan City, police said. She said three males approached her and threatened her with what appeared to be a rifle, police said.

Later that night, Indiana State Police attempted to pull over the stolen car, according to a Michigan City police news release. Three people got out of the car and ran, leading police on a short pursuit down Interstate 94, police said.

State police troopers caught two of the suspects, a 14-year-old and a 15 year-old, but the third person got away, police said. The two juveniles in police custody were charged with trespassing and resisting law enforcement in connection with the pursuit, police said. They were taken to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

Troopers at the scene found a rifle, police said.

The two juveniles in custody were released to Michigan City on Dec. 9, where police arrested them on charges linked to the alleged carjacking and another attempted carjacking. The third juvenile, a 15 year-old, was arrested Dec. 9 by a Michigan City officer, police said.

The attempted carjacking occurred about five minutes before the alleged carjacking on East Michigan Boulevard, police said. In that case, a woman described three similar suspects, police said. She got out of her car, but the group was scared off before taking it from her, police said.

The 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were charged with carjacking and attempted carjacking, police said. The other 15-year-old was charged with carjacking, attempted carjacking and two counts of dangerous possession of a firearm, police said.

There is a chance the older teens could be waived to adult court, police said.

From Staff Reports

MICHIGAN CITY — Three teens have been arrested on charges related to a carjacking and attempted carjacking Nov. 19 on East Michigan Boulevard.

Michigan City police said a 14-year-old and 15-year-old have been charged with attempted carjacking and carjacking, while another 15-year-old has been arrested on charges of attempted carjacking and dangerous possession of a firearm.

According to police, at about 7:35 p.m. Nov. 19, a man was sitting in a car at 1200 E. Michigan Blvd. when three people, apparently juveniles, approached him. One of them was armed with a rifle, according to police. They demanded the man turn over the car to them. The man was able to get out of the car, but the teens were scared off before the crime was carried out further, police said.

At about 7:40 p.m., a woman was leaving a house on Riley Court, which is near 1200 E. Michigan Blvd. While at her car, she was approached by three males, one armed with a rifle, police said. The three suspects made threats and took her car at gunpoint.

Later that evening, Indiana State Police checked a vehicle on Interstate 94 after police received complaints, and it turned out to be the female victim’s vehicle from the carjacking.

After a short pursuit, the car was stopped and the three individuals in it fled, according to police. Two of the teens were caught with the assistance of a private citizen, police said. A 14-year-old and 15-year-old were taken into custody and charged with trespass and resisting law enforcement, and were taken to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. Indiana State Police recovered a rifle during the arrest.

Det. Sgt. Steve Westphal of the Michigan City Police Department was assigned to the case, assisted by Detective Cpl. Al Bush and Detective Kay Pliske.

On Dec. 9, the two juveniles were returned to Michigan City, where they were arrested on the attempted carjacking and carjacking charges, police said. After additional investigation, Bush went to the area of Pinetree Court (Garden Estates) and arrested a 15-year-old in the case.

According to police, there is the possibility the two 15-year-olds could be waived to adult court.
