This article in today's PostTribune talks about how the Chief of Police in Gary will not go back to his alma mater after a recent "attempted" presentation there. How awful that a school has gotten so bad the Chief of Police refuses to return. How close are we to something like this in MCAS? Thoughts?

We are no where near that bad. I can tell you that first hand. I know the image that people who aren't exposed to the school on a regular basis get, but it is NOTHING like that in reality. All we hear about are the problems, which are rare and isolated.

I actually teach in East Chicago.. MC is nowhere close. Anyone who insinuates or suggests so has never set foot in a classroom there.
Kids r Kids... Those kids do not have it as easy as we did and do. Is it the institutions that are failing or the kids?
Parents (or a parent) needs institutions. (police, schools, government, family, church).
We need a makeover on all of the aforementioned.
It was sad to hear the officer use the term "never".

I don't think it's that bad at all. I really don't know what goes on during the school day, but when I go to the high school for a game I'm always treated by the students, staff and administrators with tons of respect.

Crazyiness like that happen at every school, not just Gary or Michigan City, La Porte's got the Ashcraft thing, in Valpo they're wacking each other with a machete and teachers coming in drunk...Portage they're doing god knows what on the school bus...and these are all the "model district" schools that the lady talked about wanting to mirror Michigan City after and follow their lead... dry.gif I don't think we got it so bad.

Student uses machete, knife to slash classmates at Indiana school

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — A student carrying a machete and another knife slashed five classmates Wednesday morning as they watched a Spanish class video, authorities said.

Photos Eight Valparaiso High School students were taken to the hospital, including the accused attacker, a 15-year-old freshman, Police Chief Michael Brickner said. All but one of those injured were released by Wednesday afternoon, he said. Five suffered cuts and the others complained of pain from other injuries, authorities said.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Students leave Valparaiaso (Ind.) High School with an unidentified woman Wednesday after a student carrying a machete and another knife slashed five classmates as they watched a Spanish class video, authorities said.

Authorities did not release any information about a possible motive for the attack, which happened as classes were starting at the school some 20 miles southeast of Gary.

Brickner said that before carrying out the attack, the student asked his teacher for permission to close the classroom door. He shut the door and then started swinging the weapons at his classmates, the police chief said.

"Students began to flee from the classroom, and he fled from the classroom and was tackled to the floor by school faculty members," he said.

Students described a chaotic struggle in a hallway and said they saw blood on the floor.

"The kid, after he stabbed them, he ran out of the room and a bunch of teachers tackled him," sophomore Clark Hogan said. "I saw the lady kick the knife down the hallway. She kicked it against the wall."

Brickner said one of the knives was a machete and the other was a serrated knife. The youth accused in the attack remained in custody.

School Superintendent Michael Benway said the school does not have metal detectors but that school staffers and volunteers monitor the two doors through which the school's 2,000 students enter the building.

"We're not sure exactly how he got them into school," Brickner said.

The boy is an A-B student who started in the Valparaiso school system this year, Brickner said. "I think it's accurate to say that when the teachers learned who this student was, they were very surprised," he said.

The uninjured students were allowed to leave school about 31/2 hours after the attack. Until then, they said, they were kept locked in their classrooms.

"The teachers wouldn't tell us what was going on," said Danielle Boer. "We were scared."

Police: Teacher drunk in the classroom

Police: Teacher drunk in the classroom .
..VALPARAISO | A first-grade teacher at Cooks Corners Elementary School was arrested at the school Thursday morning on a charge of public intoxication.

Sharon Duerring, 49, was intoxicated in the classroom and was found with two cans of beer in her purse, said Valparaiso police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes.

Her blood alcohol concentration was 0.20, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, police said.

Police were called to Cooks Corners at 10:30 a.m. after school officials learned of Duerring's intoxicated state, Grennes said.

School Principal Susan Cartwright did not return a telephone call Thursday and Superintendent Michael Benway declined comment, saying the case is a personnel matter that has been turned over to police.

Duerring was taken from school to jail, where she was booked, police said. School keys were taken from her and she was told not to return to the building at 358 Bullseye Lake Road, police said.

Duerring's arrest comes just two days after Cooks Corners was named a 2007 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education based on its standing among the top 10 percent in passing rates on the ISTEP.

Duerring was among the teachers celebrating the news during a special ceremony at the school.

Three Portage High School boys used threats and fear to take over the school bus they rode and then spent much of the school year sexually touching girls, using aerosol cans to make blowtorches and doing other horrible acts, police said.

The “pattern of unspeakable depravity” finally ended when a girl came forward after one of the boys tried to push her face into the exposed genitals of another of the boys, said Portage police Cpl. Troy Williams, school resource officer. An investigation showed that girl and two other girls reported the boys touched their breasts on prior occasions.”

Bad things happen at all schools. I believe the Superintendent (the lady) wants MCAS to mirror the academic success these schools have. That's what I came away from the State of the Schools Address with. But drunk teachers, students w/ knifes, teachers sleeping w/ students occurs EVERYWHERE. Nobody's talking bout the MCAS teacher fired THIS SCHOOL YEAR for pregnating a student but it happened. Our schools, (valpo, portage, LaPorte, or Gary) are not perfect but we are in the same league......Not so bad huh?

My sense is other school systems such as Chesterton, Valpo and especially La Porte simply do a better job of keeping the nonsense out of the newspapers. This statement is pretty much verified by a close friend of mine who was the "liason police officer" inside La Porte High School. He confirmed the administration at La Porte attemtps to keep the violence within their school out of the newspapers.
I suppose one solution would be to create a charter high school operated by MCAS - this high school would be for the students who want to learn while the other high school would be for those students who place little to no value on an education. The charter school could set higher expectations and standards possibly providing an opportunity for the students who wish to learn.

MCAS never had a charter school but rather had an alternative high school. A charter school could set guidelines with regard to uniforms, minimum academic standards, strict codes of conduct, et al. The vast majority of students could attend the charter high school while the remaining balance could attend the alternative high school. Poor conduct at the charter school lands the student back in the alternative high school.

The biggest problem with that is that the teachers union will do every single thing in their power to make sure it doesn't happen. I'm not sure this could get done with out a minimal amount of support from the MCEA. As an organization the ISTA is on record essentially as saying that charter schools are nothing but organizations that steal resources from the regular public schools.

There are some folks in town who are organizing a charter school, but I believe the plan is to be sponsored by a university, not MCAS.

I didn't realize public education was such a competive market. You would think that if two different organizations have the common goal of educating our future, they would support one another and work together.

Humph.

City has issues of school bus stop shootings, bomb threats and student bullying. Despite that it don't worry me going INSIDE any City school, what's scary is what goes on OUTSIDE the school I can't get over the fact that the Michigan City community has had three separate fatal shootings involving school bus stops resulting in four death. A young man was gunned down exiting the school bus on the west side, Mark Zumack/Witt family shooting and another in Springfield Township.

When I went to the candidates forum at Barker there was a half dozen disclaimers hanging in the lunch room regarding bulling prevention. What can be done to address the issue of teacher/coach/student infidelity and "sexting" across the state. All the My First Sex Teacher, Bangbus.com and Bring 'Em Young nonsense has got to stop.

City suffers academically in the English language arts, What ever happened to those Reading is Fundamental PSA's? We have kids in the 6th grade that can barely sign their own names in cursive. It's pretty bad when they when you ask them what's the capitol of Illinois, the say Chicago, then you ask what City does the Simpson's live in and they say Springfield. Just take look at a few examples of our High School students Facebook wall postings:

Hypothetically, I work with MCAS students every day. Hypothetically, I teach MCAS students everyday.

I have worked for other school systems in our area, who vary in success rates (percentage of students graduating, going to college, passing ISTEP+, etc).

I like MCAS, and I know I'm working for kids that need someone like me... someone who is educated, positive, and willing to work for them.

EVERY.. and I mean EVERY school I have ever worked for or attended has issues. Children have issues. This is life. There are varying degrees of good and bad, but that's mostly driven by socio-economic factors, not racial ones.

I will say that many of the negative behaviors that I see from my kids are echoed in the negative behaviors I see coming from their parents, older siblings and extended family members. When your family is in the paper for being arrested, you may grow up thinking that some day you may be arrested (or should be arrested). When your family walks in the middle of the street, with no disregard for cars, safety, etc., you will walk in the middle of the street, thinking you are impervious to being hit by a car. When your family comes to sporting events and screams at coaches and refs disrespectfully, you will think that is how you should treat coaches and refs.

Kids are a reflection of their home life, and we cannot expect them to suddenly conform to different behavioral standards at school. We can work to train them, we can be positive role models for them...but, I truly feel that kids act the way they're taught to act. There are always exceptions... kids who seem almost sociopathically inclined, but they are the exceptions. The rule is: kids act as they see their families act.

If we want to improve our schools--- we MUST improve our community.

[size=3]Grammy515, don't you feel that reporting a TEACHER getting FIRED for IMPREGNATING a STUDENT THIS SCHOOL YEAR is a bit irresponsible to report here? I've been around many school systems, and MCAS never hides its dirt...to its detriment, MCAS is brutally honest.

If you're acting out of civic duty you should report it formally. Start the investigation to the cover up. I mean, there must be one, right?

If what you say really happened, how is it that NOONE, including people very close (and some in the school)knows about it? Are you sure you're doing the right thing?

You're saying a teacher was fired THIS YEAR for getting a student pregnant. Are you 100% sure? 100%? I hope to all that is right, that you are repeating gossip or rumor. I know people, reliable people, at the High School, and none them report the firing of ANY teacher this year. Are you sure? A teacher? A current student? Pregnant? 100%? Don't take this personally, but I sure hope you're wrong!

Cute...this one, of course! What do you know that we haven't read about? Every fight and arrest is published, all results are published. I know the N-D is "just doing its job", but most of what I read in the paper is negative. Chesterton and Valpo are nowhere near as honest as MCAS.

What are the cover-ups? How is it that everyone has dirt on the school system, but no one will expose the facts? As business owners we try SO EFFIN HARD to promote Michigan City, and our own people publish this negative stuff on the web for all to see. If you were a casual net surfer and googled Michigan City or MCAS what do you think you'd read? Eventually, you'd come across blogs like this one (which, generally, is awesome and positive and a good source of info), but how hard would you search for the truth once you read something negative? Each little negative dig taints the work most of us are doing! We have many issues and much to fix. Should the intelligent people on this board contribute to harmful hearsay? I hope not. Think about how the legacies of celebrities who did amazing things in their jobs are tainted by negative stories. What they did/do was/is amazing, but their indiscretions shine so much brighter...particularly athletes. In this Wiki world, the first answer/search result is satisfactory and complete to most.

If you look at our school system, the demographics, the level of education of the parents, the transience, the expanding Special Ed. population, and the general attitude toward school, you'd see how hard their job is! Why should this board contribute to that struggle? Reporting an alleged teacher/student relationship and a firing for it without any corroboration is slightly irresponsible and largely detrimental to progress at MCAS. (Especially Grammy, whom I believe is VERY close to the School Board- wink.gif )

Can't we please be part of a solution here? Please? I have children here, a business here, and I love MC. We need some civic pride, responsibility, and to build some loyalty to our community. I believe in MC, despite the N-D article comments. We need to fight for our schools, our police, our firefighters, and our neighbors--who are made up of current and former students, teachers, administrators, business owners, and our families.

lbl---Sometimes it's easier to just let things go away, and more often than not, that's why people don't expose the cover-up when they are privvy to it. Furthermore, jobs could be lost by innocent people from exposing the truth, so it's easier to just let it go away.

Not saying it's right, just more or less explaining why I never "exposed" some of the awful truths I was aware of while working for the MCAS.

But don't for once say that MCAS never hides its dirt, because that is simply wrong.
