Spring is officially here. Today is the day of the vernal equinox. Impress your kids. Take a raw egg and balance it on end on a level surface.

I gotta ask. Is it because of the day / date that you can balance an egg or is it just a farmers almanac sort of thing?

It has to do with the gravitational pull of the earth. On the vernal and autumnal equinox (first day of spring and first day of fall) that the earth's axis is so perfectly aligned with the north and south pole that it centers the yolk in the egg so it sits on end. Also on the equinox that the sun is perfectly in line with the earth's equator.

Not according to snopes --

You're just as likely to balance an egg any day of the year, it's just that egg-balancing has been connected with the equinox so that's the day people tend to try doing it.
