WOLVES' PRIDE CLEAR

Deborah Sederberg
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - For a change, Homecoming queen candidates weren't shivering in their gowns as they prepared to ride in convertibles along the parade route.

Traveling Friday night from Elston Middle School's parking lot down Franklin Street to Ames Field, several girls dressed in festive interpretations of turquoise, brown and basic black praised the pleasant weather.

The class floats, on which no one was dressed formally, urged the football team to "slice and cook the Slicers," to "give the Slicers the treatment," and to "strike the Slicers" with the force of lightning powered, of course, by a wolf.

Finally, the Wolves were urged to "Wolf 'em down."

The freshmen were responsible for the "Wolf 'em down" theme. Twins Lucas and Elizabeth Stimley said the float, which sported a detailed painting of a wolf, was created at Michigan City High School and in the Stimley barn.

The sophomore class - ever green-conscious - used a wolf constructed of artificial Christmas garland and recycled from last year's Christmas-tree contest. Class sponsors Phyllis Stark, a business teacher, and Andy Jasicki, a biology teacher, said they had fun with the float, as did the students.

Class President Sean Sobecki said the various victims lying around the deck of the float - played by dolls and stuffed animals - were symbols to show "lightning can strike twice or more." The wolf naturally was perched atop a storm cloud.

The juniors, wanting to give the Slicers "the treatment," created a float on which a poor headless fellow lay stretched out on the ground. His head, however, was on a table and for good measure, it was pierced with a hypodermic needle.

The senior class portrayed the Slicers as sausage on a meat slicer. As the gadget turned, class sponsor Krissy Freitag said, the sausage is sliced and ready to be cooked. Senior Paul Hastings was there to fine-tune the barbecue grill by adjusting the fan that powered the paper flames.

In the background, the Wolf Pack Marching band rehearsed, the Junior Marine ROTC drilled and senior ROTC members kept pedestrians and vehicles from violent meetings.

Meanwhile, a whole float full of Mullen Elementary School student council members, with Principal Connie Bachmann walking alongside, enjoyed their status as the only elementary school represented in the parade.

I got to MC the games afterwards for the 5th or 6th year in a row now... What a great time. They did the games inside the gym as well, which was actually a pretty nice venue.

Getting fired up for Homecoming

Laurie Wink
The News-Dispatch

Annual events take place at MCHS.

MICHIGAN CITY - Michigan City High School students rocked the Wolves Den on Wednesday evening, led by the inspired antics of Sylvester Mabone, self-appointed head cheerleader at the Spirit Week activities.

Mabone is well-known for leading pep rallies at MCHS and made a surprise appearance yesterday. No one expected him to show up because he had transferred to Elston Middle School as an assistant principal.

Mabone fired up the separate sections of freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. He had each section yell out a letter to spell "C-I-T-Y," and pitted sections against each other to see who yelled the loudest. Mabone said being around students for about 30 years has energized him.

"It's always nice to see kids doing something positive," he said. "I love this."

For the first time this year, the pep session was held at night rather than during the school day to give the event more time, according to Angie Gresham, Spirit Week faculty co-sponsor and high school biology teacher. She said the week of events leads up to the homecoming football game on Friday, when the Wolves take on the La Porte Slicers in a county rivalry.

Monday was designated as Clash/Crazy Hair Day; Tuesday was Stoplight Day, with students wearing red, yellow or green depending on whether they were taken, not sure or available.

Wednesday was the annual Class Color Day and Class Olympics, which were moved into the Wolves Den because of the rain-soaked soccer field. The venue change didn't dampen student spirits, as evidenced by the colorful groups of keyed up kids wearing different colored T-shirts.

The experience level of the grade levels showed in their shirts. The freshmen Class of 2012 wore shirts in varying shades of yellow and a variety of individual designs.

A group of freshmen cheerleaders was on the sidelines ready to rally their troops. Cheerleader Angelica Bowen said, "I love seeing people pumped up and energized."

Juniors sported purple T-shirts designed by Matthew Brinkman, who represented the Class of 2010 using the periodic table number 20, for calcium, and 10 for neon. The back of the shirts said, "We are the elements of spirit."

Junior Jessie Starnes was among a charged up group of her classmates but said she didn't like moving the pep session to the evening.

"I think it's better during the day," she said. "It's more exciting because of the larger crowd."

The evening events included the introduction of 12 candidates for homecoming queen. To be selected, each girl had to participate in four clubs and have a 3.0 grade point average. The queen will be announced Friday. The Olympic events included a relay race, tug of war and dodgeball.

Spirit Week faculty cosponsor Krissi Freitag is senior class sponsor and was wearing the senior's signature black T-shirt with the word "Seniors" written in white letters. The design was created by senior Darius Johnson and sold for $10.

As a high school economics and U.S. history teacher, Freitag knows the seniors well.

"They're a pretty good group of kids," she said.
