QUOTE Michigan City's marinas honored for being 'clean' Comments September 1, 2010 POST-TRIBUNE STAFF REPORT MICHIGAN CITY -- Two Michigan City marinas will be recognized Thursday for protecting water quality and habitat. Representatives from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will recognize Washington Park and Sprague Point marinas, both operated by the Michigan City Port Authority, as "Clean Marinas" on Thursday. If you go What: Clean Marina Induction Ceremonies honoring Washington Park and Sprague Point marinas in Michigan City. Where: Washington Park Marina, 200 Heisman Harbor Drive, Michigan City When: 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2. The Clean Marina Program, unveiled in May 2008, is a voluntary technical assistance program that encourages marina operators and recreational boaters to protect water quality and habitat by engaging in environmentally sound operating and maintenance practices. To receive the designation, marinas complete a self-assessment and undergo a site visit after implementing best management practices recommended in the Indiana Clean Marina guidebook. The guidebook provides marinas, boat yards, yacht clubs and recreational boaters with environmentally friendly practices to control runoff pollution to protect our lakes and rivers. The Indiana Clean Marina Program is a collaborative effort between IDEM, DNR and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant. |
