Joy School Students Donate $212 to Pay for Mammograms for Underprivileged Women
Written by Franciscan Alliance, Inc.
Last Updated on 14 November 2012

Joy-Elementary-Franciscan-Fundraiser-2012Michigan City Joy Elementary School students pay 50 cents to wear jeans to school on the first and third Fridays of month, to help raise funds for community causes.

In just two of those days, they raised $212 that was donated on Nov. 13 to Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City to be used to help pay for mammograms for women who otherwise cannot afford them.

The collection was taken during in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Fifth-grader Ryan Utapel, a member of the school’s Culture and Climate Committee, presents a check to Trish Weber, hospital vice president of operations and chief nursing officer, who led a contingent of Franciscan St. Anthony Health representatives on hand at an assembly in the gym. Weber told the crowd of students how much their effort will mean to the women it will help.

Military-Skills-2012-1The Michigan City High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) hosted a military skills competition on Saturday, November 17th, at Elston Middle School. 10 schools from northwest Indiana and Chicago land competed in marksmanship, physical fitness, academics, personnel inspection and military drill. Michigan City earned trophies in seven events, to include finishing first in the marksmanship competition. The meet was sponsored by the Michiana Marines, the local chapter of the Marine Corps League.

“This was a great experience, as it allowed us to see other schools and compare where we are at with them,” said sophomore Cadet Staff Sergeant Alex Wyman, who commanded two of the units that placed to earn awards. “It makes you want to work harder to earn more trophies at future drill competitions.”

Military-Skills-2012-2Cadet Gunnery Sergeant Cody Joseph, who also commanded two units earning awards, had similar feelings. “It is tough getting to school so early for practice, but when you see the positive results, it makes it all worth it.” The drill team practices every morning starting at 5:45.

Major Tom McGrath, the Senior Marine Instructor, was pleased with the effort of all cadets involved in the competition, to include non-drill team cadets who supported the function “It takes much effort to host a competition like this. Only a minority of schools takes this on, and we are one of the few who includes academics, physical fitness and marksmanship in addition to drill and the personnel inspection in the competition. This has been a busy month, with our Marine Corps Ball, four ceremonies honoring veterans, and this major project. Our cadets have demonstrated great flexibility and the ability to handle multiple tasks,” he said.

Military-Skills-2012-3Master Sergeant Jeff Benak, the Marine Instructor, also noted the MCHS effort but emphasized how much more the cadets needed to improve. “This was our first competition of the year. It was a good barometer of where we stand with other schools. It is good that we placed in so many events, but we need to continue to get better if we want to be competitive in future meets.

MCHS MCJROTC’s next competition will be December 8th at Purdue University in West Lafayette.

One-City-One-Sound-2011-1“Mega-Concert” to Feature Hundreds of Student Performers

Festive holiday music will fill the air as more than 1,500 vocalists and instrumentalists perform together at the Michigan City Area Schools’ “One City, One Sound” concert on Thursday, December 13. The event will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Michigan City High School gymnasium. Admission is free, however all who attend are encouraged to bring a towel (bath towel, kitchen towel, paper towels, etc.) to assist Sand Castle Shelter, in a “Wipe Out Homelessness” campaign. Monetary donations to the shelter will also be accepted that evening.

This year’s “One City, One Sound” will feature:

454 voices in a chorus of fifth graders from all nine Michigan City elementary schools.
350 voices in a chorus of students from all three middle schools.
170 voices in a chorus of high school students.
42 voices in the Michigan City High School Treble Chorale.
27 voices in the Michigan City High School “City Singers.”
8 hand bell players in the Michigan City High School “City Ringers.”
139 instrumentalists in a fifth and sixth grade beginning band.
187 instrumentalists in a seventh and eighth grade band.
132 instrumentalists from the MCHS cadet, concert, and symphonic bands.

Each group will perform individually, and the closing number will involve all bands and choruses in a selection entitled, “Let There Be Peace.” Other numbers will include “Santa at the Symphony,” “Sparklejollytwinklejingley,” and “No Greater Gift.” Music teachers from throughout the Michigan City Area Schools will lead their groups; the combined numbers will be under the direction of MCHS choral director Dennis Kienitz and band director Quincy Ford.

One-City-One-Sound-2011-2Music programs at MCAS have seen a resurgence in recent years; the 2012 “One City One Sound” will feature the largest number of students in the mega-concert’s six-year history, with an increase of more than 200 performers since last year’s event. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to see and hear our music program, bottom to top,” says Kienitz. “It also gives the younger students a chance to see what’s possible for them at higher levels.”

The concert will be broadcast live on Channel 98 educational TV, and will stream live on the Michigan City Area Schools web site at EducateMC.net. It will also air live on Michigan City radio stations WEFM (95.9 FM) and WIMS (AM 1420).

Note: Pahs Road in the area of Michigan City High School will be closed to west-bound traffic prior to the One City One Sound concert, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. During this time, all traffic departing the high school will be routed east on Pahs to Johnson Road.

japaneseolympiadteamTwo teams of students studying Japanese at Michigan City High School finished in third place at the Japanese Olympiad of Indiana, a day-long academic tournament held at Ball State University on March 2.

More than 150 students from 16 high schools took part in this year’s Japanese Olympiad, which was judged by professors from Ball State, Indiana University, Earlham, and DePauw. Students competed in separate divisions based on their years of experience in the study of Japanese (second, third, and fourth year Japanese). Teams performed translations and answered questions about Japanese proverbs, reading comprehension, geography, writing, history, current events, mathematics, and more.

At Level 2, the MCHS team of Sam Cooney, Allen Murray, and Preston Mahaffey qualified for the finals, and then finished third in the state. This is the first time a team from MCHS has advanced to the championship round at Level 2.

At Level 4, a veteran MCHS team made up of Theresa Saenz, Jaspar Miller, and Aaron Rehbein edged a team from Valparaiso High School to make the finals, and took third in the state in the championship round. This team won the JOI championship last year, when they competed at Level 3.

“Working with these students has been a joy and an inspiration,” said Mike Tsugawa, MCHS Japanese teacher and JOI Team Coach. “They set a great example for future competitors.”

This year, winning teams received a special honor: they were presented plaques by the Consul General from the Japanese Consulate in Chicago, who was in attendance. Also featured this year were Japanese musicians, who performed on three traditional Japanese instruments: the koto, shamiseni, and the zenidaiko.

In addition to the students on the two winning teams, several other MCHS students competed in the JOI. They included: Will Alexander, Rebecca LaFollette, Steven Siegmund, Kieri Everett, Kenneth Parish, Josh Summerlin, Cori Bracken, and Vincent Kolasa. (Teammate Jenna Davis was unable to attend due to illness.)

Michigan City High School has an active Japanese Club, which will host a delegation of students from Zama Sogo High School in Zama City, Japan, for two weeks beginning March 15.

The number of the day is 1897. What does that number represent you might ask? That is the number of college credits earned by Michigan City HIGH SCHOOL students last year before ever having set foot as a student on a college campus. This number was larger than Chesterton, Valpo, Crown Point, Lake Central, or ANY other Duneland school. What an important stat with the cost of college today, these credits could literally be the difference between being able to afford college or not for some of our at risk students. Kudos to the MCAS and the students!
