Have u herd what’s goin’ on at news-dispatch?
From what a person was saying at this place i was at last week, they have have fired most of their peeps in the “newsroom.” 3Photo-taking people, gone. 2reporters, gone.Main guy in charge, gone. Main editor peron, almost-gone.4 people in their pressroom, they were als told to get gone. This person sez the herad-arg folks have quietly tken over at news-dispatch. The person sez they’re not competitig with the HA anymore, but someone up in charge want it too look like that they’s are. Guezz from what i herd, nobody is happy overthere anymore. i was thinkig bout studying newspapers in schol. don't know if myhometown newspaper will b here when i grad in 2013. |

I haven't heard a whole lot on this specific topic. I do know that the photographers are no longer there. The only photographer for the county (working for both papers) is Bob Wellinski, from the H-A. (Incidentally, I've witnessed him at work a few times--great guy, takes good photos for out local papers).
The rest of it is all news to me (no pun intended). Who is the "head guy" who you're referring to? |

Who is the "head guy" who you're referring to? Maybe the editor (Welch/Welsch?) who transfered to somewhere like Kentucky or Tennessee recently? I can't remember the details, but I saw it on Google News a while back. The rest of the post, I know nothing about. |

Welcome to the board, Xio!
When I was in journalism school at a major Midwestern university, many moons ago, there was talk about the demise of print journalism. That was before the rise of the internet (heck, my journalism classrooms had manual typewriters in them, and we used carbon paper -- damn, I'm old!), and we all figured TV and radio would put newspapers out of business. These days, the talk is that internet based news is going to replace newspapers -- and this time I think the threat is very real. The News-Dispatch and the Herald Argus have been owned by the same company for a while now. Printing of both papers is now being done off-site (up in Michigan, IIRC). I suppose it isn't too surprising that they would be consolidating the two papers. |

And just a tip X, if you are planning on going into journalism, you probably should spell worse than I do, even if it is intentionally!

I just noticed there was no Rick Richards column on Friday... is he a victim of the purge or just on vacation?

The News-Disgrace has been horrible for years and years, and since they bought HA. They really dragged that paper down in the dumps

I got an email from someone at the ND who was a little more forthcoming than Scott Lawson. He said that ANOTHER paper (not affiliated with ours) was invovled in a liable case and so as a precaution, the ND lawyers suspended our Soundoff pending a review of the content. They feel confident that there are no potential liable suits because Soundoff is edited just like the Anvil Chorus, but the lawyers want to review it anyway.
