A Michigan City man was sitting on train tracks and drinking beer when he was hit and killed by a train Thursday night, police said.

It happened before 7 p.m. CST near Grace and Holliday streets. Police said the victim, L.B. Steward, 57, was sitting on the tracks and drinking a beer while the train was approaching.

Witnesses told police that they yelled at him to move, but Steward didn't listen to their warnings. Police are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Police: South Shore commuter train strikes pedestrian for second time in two days

Lauren Cross l

SOUTH BEND — For the second time in two days, transit police have responded to the scene of a pedestrian being struck by a South Shore commuter train.

At about 7:05 p.m. Friday, a 55-year-old man from South Bend "intentionally stepped" in front of Train 22 at the South Bend Airport station, according to witnesses, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Police Chief Bob Byrd said.

Byrd said the train only clipped him, essentially spinning him away from the its path.

He was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, Byrd said. He has been admitted for observation, he added.

This is the second night in a row someone was struck by a South Shore passenger train, though Thursday night's incident in Michigan City ended in a fatality.

The man was identified as L.B. Steward, 57, of Michigan City. At about 6:55 p.m. Thursday night, Steward was "sitting on the tracks" as an eastbound commuter train headed his direction when he was struck, according to witnesses, Byrd said.

Witnesses told police they yelled to Steward to get off the tracks, but he did not heed their warnings, Byrd said.
