County councilman seeks position as recorder

La PORTE — Second district County Councilman Earl Cunningham announced he will seek the position of County Recorder this spring.

Cunningham said taxpayers — and saving them money — are the main reasons he wants to be the county's recorder.

"I am committed to putting the taxpayers first," he explained.

His intention to run is followed with a guarantee that he will save the taxpayers money over one term.

"If I can't save the taxpayers $100,000 in one term, I will personally pay the difference," said Cunningham.

With this promise, Cunningham said he believes he can save the county even more, and would take the position to prove that point.

Cunningham said he will only seek the position of County Recorder for one term.

As a lifelong resident of La Porte County, Cunningham said he has held nearly 20 different jobs, with the purpose of familiarizing himself to the county's diversity.

His long list of jobs includes teaching business law, math, coaching and assistant coaching Michigan City area schools, teaching Driver's Education, working on his grandfather's farm, working on an assembly line at Allis-Chalmers, working on several construction jobs, as well as being in insurance sales, a real estate broker and working for the United State Government in Africa.

He has also been a county councilman for five years and believes he and the council have worked hard to save the county money.

"I believe I have proven, during my five years on the council, that I am responsible to the taxpayers, not the party, and will continue to work across the aisle," said Cunningham.

Cunningham said he has nothing bad to say about the current County Recorder, John Stimley.

"My job would be to do the same thing he's doing, saving the taxpayers money," said Cunningham.

I'm curious about how he would make up the difference, if it came to that. I'm not a lawyer and don't know the law on this subject, but by what mechanism would he transfer the funding? Government offices don't normally take donations. I guess he could set up a "Friend of the Recorder's Office" foundation, but that seems extreme.

Does anyone have an idea?

------------------------

The implication is clear that Mr Cunningham would make the difference from his own pocket. However, there are other issues.

Cunningham has declared he can save $100,000.00 in the operation of the Recorder's office. Perhaps another candidate could save, for example, 15% more but isn't able to offer a similar guarantee because he or she lacks the personal resources required to so do. Making a $100,000.00 bet doesn't mean you'll be a better Recorder - it just means you can make a big bet. A bet, incidentally, ten times larger than Mr Romney tried to make with Newt.

Another factor is quality of services. It may be that a $100.000.00 cut in the Recorder's office would require a lowering of standards. It's nice to know ANY candidate can save us big money but how do we know we will be satisfied with the end result? Most citizens would like to know what end result might look like - and how well the job will done at the end of the day. If Cunningham loses the election, will he promise to share the techniques for saving the hundred grand? Why didn't he step forward after the last election?

Let's hear some details!

I won't quarrel with any candidate who claims to be able to save us big money but to have that candidate offer us what some might consider a bribe to obtain our votes leaves a bad taste. But, if Mr. Cunningham insists, let's ask him to purchase a performance bond to guarantee the $100,000.00 bet.

Cunningham doesn't have a free $100k laying around. Bet money he has a plan to cut that money. Its $25k a year.

And that is wrong to call it a bribe. He isn't offering to pay us the money to get into office.

Stimley seeks second term as recorder

Published: Friday, February 3, 2012 5:06 PM CST
County Recorder Johnny Stimley will seek a second term in office four years after his successful bid for the post in 2008.

Stimley, who refers to himself as "a staunch supporter" of the Democratic Party, owns Ryan's Irish Pub in Michigan City. He's also president of the Coolspring Democratic Club and a precinct committeeman.

One accomplishment he's most proud of during his first term is initiating an eight-hour turnaround on all recorded documents. He also pointed to one project where the recorder's office installed a video-surveillance system in 2011 in cooperation with the sheriff's office to "stop mischief and secure vital documents" stored in the remote records vault, which is open to public access.

Stimley's community involvement includes starting the city's St. Patrick's Day parade nine years ago, organizing the Washington Park Zoo 5K Run and Walk and serving as chair of the local Soap Box Derby for the last six years.

He also is a member of 25 clubs and organizations.

If elected, Stimley asserted he and his staff will continue "to work on enhancing the safe keeping of all documents" and "continue the project of back indexing and handling all future projects with efficiency."

QUOTE
Grandfather praised Earl Cunningham

Published: Saturday, March 3, 2012 5:06 PM CST
My grandfather, the late Harold Werdine, was a very shrewd, sometimes harsh judge of character. I can still see him now: his stern, penetrating gaze, his skeptical countenance, and his face a tight lipped grimace of permanent distrust. He did not suffer fools gladly, and doled out praise parsimoniously, if at all.

When I saw that Earl Cunningham was running for county recorder, I remembered what my grandfather had once told me some 20 years ago: that Earl Cunningham was one of the gutsiest men he ever knew. He had, he said, never seen any man in public life stand up to fight more fearlessly and courageously than he.

In an age where public figures and politicians have become more craven, corrupt, and self-seeking than ever, it is refreshing to know that some are not, and never have been.

Supporting Cunningham for recorder

Published: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 5:06 PM CDT
I have known Earl Cunningham for almost 20 years. He and I worked together for seven years as assistant athletic directors at Michigan City High School. He is always well prepared for any task or assignment. His attention to detail, organization, preparation, and planning is always done thoroughly and well ahead of schedule.

In addition to his outstanding coaching skills he has accomplished the following. As a volunteer he has tutored well over 100 students in math in order to help them pass the Indiana High School Graduation Qualifying Exam, as president of the La Porte County Retired Teacher’s Association he reorganized it into a highly functioning group, he has served admirably on the La Porte County Council, and along with his wife Faye has set up and funded a scholarship program for students through Unity Foundation.

When Earl says he can save $100,000 as LaPorte County Recorder it is just the beginning. There is no doubt that he already knows where he will save this money or he would not make the promise. He is honest and trustworthy and will serve in the interest of the people.

I asked him and the answer is simple. He is going to take politics out of the office. The Vice-recorder position that is politicaly filled is to be eliminated. Right now it is held by Party leader John Jones wife. Being responcible with tax dollars a pretty good ideal for a poiticition, but very much political suicide!
