I believe this is the newest Chinese place in MC, and it takes over for another place which had been there for a long time. This is the place right next the Midas and St John's on South Franklin Street.

This is definately more of a fast food type Chinese place, versus a place like Oriental Pearl, which is a more high end of a restaurant. The food is pretty solid, but the prices are the thing that makes this an attractive place to eat. They are still trying to build a clientelle it seems, so they usually throw in a set of egg rolls for free when my whole family orders. The food is usually done pretty quickly as well. After reading about the misdeeds dealing with illegal immigrants housing by the ownership of Fortune House, this place has become my choice for inexpensive Chinese food.

Can we expand this thread to discuss all the Chinese restaurants in MC area?

Gourmet House: I think I ate there when they first opened, but that was a coupl'a years ago. Same ownership as then? I do recall it was tasty, but no more detail than that.

Fortune House: I know someone who was quite ill from eating shrimp there; plus I tend to shy away from buffets.

Peking: The General's Chicken is the best I have had anywhere. While I enjoy going there, I find the food usually has more sauce than I personally care for.

China One: I would like to know what people think of this joint.

Oriental Pearl: almost always very good. A different kind of place than these others, as you mentioned.

Leave anyone out?

I used to work at Marquette mall as a manager for a men's clothing store that is no longer there. The clothes were very trendy and one of the sons from Panda (which I believe is where Gourmet House is now--if I understood Southsider correctly) loved to shop at my store. We had a deal worked out that I would give him my discount and he would bring us food. He would bring a little bit of everything on the menu. Enough for my entire staff to eat all day, and he would buy like $300.00 worth of stuff-after the discount. This happened about once a month. What a deal!

Trade-outs like this are really great. I remember one we had in St Paul. I used to stop there and get pizza to bring home, and one froglegs dinner to eat on the way! After a while, I could not eat them anymore: The started to taste too amphibian!

Was Fortune House the restaurant that owned the overcrowded house that caught fire last year?

Yes it was. The conditions in that house are THE reason I will NEVER eat there again, until the place is sold.

Before I moved to Casper, I lived a block down from that house that burned down. My daughter used to play with their son. One time he left his bike in our yard, so I took it down to the house to return it. The boy appeared to be home alone (he was only 8 at the time) and there was not one stick of furniture in the place. I thought that very strange and felt bad for the little lad. The parents would make him work at the restaurant after school. They kept him in the back and he would take out the trash, sweep the floors, etc. When he told me that, I never set foot in Fortune House again.

I ate at fortune house once when I was sick a couple years ago. I didn't want to deal with anyone and just wanted some soup. What I had wasn't good and it all looked pretty lousy and glazed over. Panda house was ok and Pearl is pretty good, probably the best in town.
I know this is kind of off topic but if any of you guys ever really want to get down on some real deal chinese, KenKee in China town right in the mall.

I did want to throw one more place into the discussion that I had forgot about... The Chinese buffet in Wal-Mart plaza is solid for what it is. It didn't have quite the selection of Fortune House, but the food overall was better, and to my knowledge they don't house their employees in subhuman conditions, so that works for me.

Chinatown in Chicago. Looks like it should be pretty close to the redline stop.

Max, it's in China town. It's the real deal too. I know it's not in M.C. but it's not far and it will be the new benchmark for you as far as Chinese food goes. Don't be suprised if your the only non asian in there (although I don't know you aren't asian, just guessing) and you don't recognize anything on the menu. I've never had ANYTHING bad there and sometimes I don't really know what I'm ordering, lol. They have some pretty bizarre things on the menu and the way it's translated cracks me up. They have one dish which is Duck Chin. I thought for sure it was going to be the cheek of the duck or something so I ordered it once. Sure enough, it was duck chin! Although a little on the wild side, it was really really good! You can get down with some real food for two and walk awa not paying much.

Chinese food in MC? What'll be next Mexican?
The only chinese place that was in town when I lived there was on Michigan Blvd. It was either next door to Don Jones Datsun or down the street.
I think I saw online about a year ago the place was for rent or sale.
Next you'll be telling me there's a Taco Bell in MC.

you mean Taco Hell? Yeah, there is one. It's combined with Pizza Hut. If you can believe that. Pizza Hut became an adult toy store that caught on fire. Now I don't know what is there.
