Crash on Toll Road kills eight

From Staff Reports

A crash at about 6:42 a.m. Thursday morning claimed eight lives on the Indiana Toll Road.

Indiana State Police said the crash occurred in the westbound lanes about a mile and a half east of the Bristol bridge construction zone in Elkhart County. Police said the cause of the crash was driver inattention.

The initial investigation showed that traffic in the westbound lanes had stopped as a wrecker removed a tractor-trailer from the median about two miles west of the crash. Police said this earlier and unrelated event caused a traffic backup for westbound vehicles.

Investigators said they believe that the nearby construction zone did not play any part in the crash.

In all, three tractor-trailers and four passenger vehicles were involved in the wreck.

“The crash scene resembled a battle zone with debris of the vehicles scattered across the west bound lanes of the Toll Road,” said Indiana State Trooper Pete Bradley.

He said a 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer, registered to New England Motor Freight from Elizabeth, N.J., initiated the chain reaction crash. The driver, Leonardo J. Cooksey, 31, Mount Prospect, Ill., was not injured. Cooksey's tractor-trailer struck the rear of a Ford F250 pickup truck, sending it careening into several other vehicles.

Five passengers were killed in the F250 along with three other people in separate vehicles.

The Indiana State Police investigation is continuing with the assistance of ISP vehicle crash re-constructionists, Commercial Motor Vehicle Division, and the Elkhart County Coroner.

Police said the names of those killed are:

€ Douglas and Mary Helen George, Springfield, N.H., a driver and passenger in a 2003 Jeep Cherokee.

€ Mark S. Repp, Sturgis, Mich., driver of a 2000 Ford F150 pick-up.

€ Samuel J. Yoder, 46, a passenger in the 2000 Ford F250.

€ Anthony Yoder, 17, the son of Samuel Yoder, a passenger in 2000 Ford F250.

€ Merle D. Miller, 44, Ligonier, Ind., a passenger in 2000 Ford F250.

The names of two of the deceased have not bee released pending notification of next of kin.

Injured were:

€ Wayne R. Lehman, LaGrange, Ind., driver of 2000 Ford F250. He was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

€ Roger Lewis, 57, Sturgis, Mich., driver of 2006 Ford Focus. He was treated and released from Elkhart General Hospital.

Also involved in the accident was:

€ Leonardo J. Cooksey, 31, Mount Prospect, Ill.

€ Roger A. Kluge, 39, Sullivan, Mo., driver of a 2006 International semi-tractor trailer, no injuries.

€ Bill Tolson, 49, Fremont, Ind., driver of a 2003 Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer, no injuries.
