QUOTE
"I'm mad as hell, and I am not going to take it anymore!"

Even if you are too young to remember the exact moment this was first said, anyone can relate to the raw emotion behind it. The phrase has almost become a cliche today, but I am going to borrow it to start my letter with this thought, as residents of Michigan City, why aren't we mad as hell?

Think about the state of the City around you. Are you happy or satisfied? From the people I have talked to during my campaign for the school board, to the people I have talked to as the Council and Mayoral races have begun to heat up, I have yet to hear one person answer that they are happy or satisfied with their City. Thomas Jefferson once said that every generation needs a revolution; well our time is now. Now is the time to demand leadership we deserve. All nine city council seats and the mayor's office are up for election. If we deem it necessary we can completely change the face of Michigan City's government forever.

What all of us need to do today is decide what is most important to us in our future, and demand the answers from the candidates who end up in front of us for the up coming elections. The following are my three questions for all who wish to try to enter office during this cycle.

#1 What are your plans for the school system? How would you try to stabilize and improve it?

#2 What is your vision for the North End? Most importantly, how would you sell that vision to the people of Michigan City, and to the necesary developers and investors?

#3 How are you planning on improving the job situation in Michigan City?

I know I have ideas and answers, and I know what I want to hear from a canditate. The person that can come forward with the best answers to these 3 questions, will be the one who does receive my vote in this election.

southsider, I think this is a very good letter. I still think it would be better developed as a guest editorial because an editorial carries more weight than a letter to the editor. It will also allow others to respond via the anvil chorus which would serve to keep the issue to the fore.

I am not very familiar with their format, but what do you need to do to be considered for a guest editorial, and does it need to be longer than a usual letter?

Did you talk with any of the beat reporters when you made your school board run? Talk to them... tell them what you wanna do and ask for their advice on how to approach it. I don't know if you talk to the City Editor or Dave Hawk, the managing editor, but I'm pretty sure approval goes through one of them.

I think that I would ask Hawk, the managing editor

FWIW, I did forward on the letter to the ND. I'll see if they want to just use it for the Anvil Chorus, or if they do something different. I'll be sure to let you all know.

I hope they give it the space & prominence it deserves. Many people will find this to be a good summary of their own feelings and use the points in all political discussions.

Thank you and good luck.

I did hear back, and it is being published. Sounds like it will either be in today or tomorrow's edition.

Is it going in the Anvil Chorus, or a guest editorial?

I think the AC. He said it would be printed "as a letter".

Bummer! Then I won't get to see it in the paper. (sigh) I really wish they would put anvil chorus letters in the online version.

For those who are close, my letter is the very first one in the Anvil Chorus.

Nice placement! Let's hope the general public takes notice, and follows your lead.

They put the letter in the best possible place, even headlining it. Do you think you can scan the page and post it so Ang et al. can see how it presented in the ND?
