QUOTE 2009 DCI schedule announced MICHIGAN CITY - The 2009 Drum Corps International World Championship Drum & Bugle Corps Open Class Quarterfinals schedule has been announced by the Michigan City Summer Festival Committee and DCI. The World Championships are scheduled for Michigan City and Indianapolis through 2018. This year's events in Michigan City are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 3 and 4, at Ames Field. Twenty corps from the United States and Canada are entered in this year's competition. The official opening ceremonies are at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Ames Field Fountain. Mayor Charles Oberlie and DCI Executive Director Dan Acheson will speak. The Legends from Kalamazoo, Mich., and Velvet Knights from Pasadena, Calif., will perform. The Michigan City High School JROTC Honor Guard will present the "Parade of Flags." Admission is free. The competition is at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Ames Field. The top 17 corps will advance to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis later in the week. Tickets will go on sale for $15 in Michigan City in June. Both days events are being filmed as part of a historical documentary. Also, this year's competition will be filmed in its entirety for a commercial-free broadcast as an "On Demand" feature of "The Fan Network." The broadcast will begin showing Aug. 6. Emmy award-winning director and producer Tom Blair and his crew will film. National and world media will also cover the events. "We are thrilled to be part of this year's broadcast schedule. Last year we were only able to have audio performance downloads. It will be an honor to have Mr. Blair and his crew here to film the competition," said Mike Pease, local event chairman. Also, a special 1 1/2-minute video promoting Michigan City businesses and tourism will be shown across the country this summer at major drum and bugle corps events in large stadiums that have Jumbotron screens and video ribbons. Each location will show the video several times. Some of these are the U.S. Naval Academy, Stanford University, Georgia Dome, Alamodome, Americafest at the Rose Bowl on July 4, Invesco Field at Mile High, Florida Citrus Bowl, Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and many others, Pease said. The video is being shown at no cost to the city. "This kind of publicity for the community is priceless. Hundreds of thousands of people around the country will get a chance to see what Michigan City has to offer. This is exciting stuff," Pease said. Local businesses wishing to become sponsors can join more than 50 national corporate sponsors and have their company banner or logo hang in Ames Field and will receive a sponsorship package which includes tickets, World Championship DVDs, program books and other incentives depending on sponsorship levels. Businesses can contact Pease at 872-1601 for sponsorship information. The city of Michigan City and Summer Festival Committee will be honored on the field in front of a crowd of 35,000 at the DCI World Championship Finals on Aug. 8 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Mayor Oberlie and the committee will present a special traveling trophy to the Michigan City winner. |
