QUOTE Michigan City Fire Department 22 mins ยท Structure Fire December 3, 2018 At approximately 12:40 AM on December 3, 2018 the Michigan City Fire Department received a 911 call for a report of a structure fire in the 700 block of west 10th street. While en-route, several calls were received for the confirmed structure fire. The first arriving fire department apparatus Engine 1 along with the command vehicle Car 10 arrived on scene within minutes of the original call and reported heavy smoke and flames that were visible from the second floor and first floor back apartments. The structure was a 4 Unit apartment building. It was confirmed that all residents were out of the structure and responding engine companies started fire suppression tactics quickly. One female resident was taken from the scene by LaPorte County EMS to the hospital and her injuries are unknown at this time. It is believed her injuries are from a fall when evacuating the structure from the second floor. The Structure was brought under control 2:24 AM. After suppression the building was partially demolished due to the possible collapse of the back of the building. The cause of the fire is presently under investigation. Smoke detectors were present and working in the units and alerted residents that there was smoke and fire. The Michigan City Fire Department wants to remind our citizens to check their smoke detectors regularly. Fire can move quickly through a home, and seconds might save your life. The Michigan City Fire Department responded with Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Engine 4 and the T Rex Aerial Unit. All command units were on scene as well. Assisting the Fire Department on the Scene was LaPorte County EMS, Michigan City Police Department, NIPSCO and D&M Excavating. Coolspring Volunteer Fire Department was contacted also to remain on standby for any additional structure fires during the incident. The American Red Cross was contacted and will be assisting residents that were displaced. |
