Reports are that Elston Middle School is under lockdown due to gunfire. No details of if that is inside or outside of the school.

Now it sounds like it was gunfire at 11th and Pine, lockdown was a precaution.

Michigan City Police Department
Press Release:

On October 23rd 2012 at approximately 8:00AM several shots were fired in the area of 11th St. and Spring St. in Michigan City. Several officers and detectives converged in the area. Several people are being spoken with.

As far as we know, there were no persons wounded in this incident, but there was damage done to property as a result of the shooting.

The investigation is in its early stages, therefore information is limited.

Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to call D/Cpl. Tim Baker at (219) 874-3221 Ext. #340 or the Crime Tip Hotline (219) 873-1488.

MICHIGAN CITY | Two schools in Michigan City were placed on lockdown today due to some nearby gunfire.

About 8:30 a.m. police were called to the area of 11th and Spring streets.

Police Chief Mark Swistek says a vehicle was shot multiple times.

Elston Middle School and St. Paul Lutheran School were placed on lockdown as a standard precaution due to the gunfire occurring just a few blocks away.

Swistek did not know if the car was occupied during the gunfire.

No arrests were reported but Swistek said witnesses being interviewed by detectives.

No injuries were also reported.

The lockdown has been lifted at both schools, according to police.
