In-Water Boat Show to add RV show to the mix

MICHIGAN CITY — When the Progressive Insurance Michigan City In-Water Boat Show comes to town in August, visitors will also get to see new recreational vehicles.

“Hopefully this show will bolster the boat show,” said Michigan City Live Productions President Mike Dempsey at the Michigan City Parks Board Thursday when he presented information about the event. He said that he was just presenting the concept of the event and would provide complete information to the board later. The board approved the concept as well as waived fees for the event.

“I love this, I’m in favor of this,” said Park Board member Bryant Dabney, who moved to approve the concept and waive first-time fees.

Dempsey said he and Parks Superintendent Jan Orlich had the idea of combining the In-Water Boat Show with an RV show as a way of adding new events featuring Washington Park and the lakefront. The combined events reportedly work in Chicago and helped declining attendance for the boat show, Dempsey said.

Jason Miller, of the La Porte County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, told park board members he believes that it could also bring people to see other areas of the lakefront and the Washington Park Zoo. “We’re going to put a lot of our efforts into this,” Miller said.

Dempsey said that by adding the RV show to the Boat Show, as many as 7,000 to 10,000 visitors could be expected over the four-day weekend. Extra parking would be available at the Senior Center and Fedders Alley parking lots. The shows are set for Thursday, Aug. 23 through Sunday, Aug. 26.

According to the Michigan City Port Authority website, the Progressive Insurance Michigan City In-Water Boat Show was first held 33 years ago. It has grown into one of the largest in-water events on the Great Lakes.

Michigan City Live Productions is a non-profit recently created and headed by Dempsey, along with Atley Price, vice president. Former Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie serves as its secretary and Louis Webber is treasurer.

Price told the board that the new organization is in the “exploratory stage” of planning other events. Oberlie added, “Our objective is to have big scale events” or entertainment featuring Washington Park and its facilities.

Sunny Days for the Michigan City In-Water Boat Show
August 26, 2012 7:06 pm • By Bill Paige Times Correspondent

The weather cooperated for most of the four days during the 33rd Annual Michigan City In-Water Boat Show, as did boat and accessories sales.

“We had great weather and the boats have been selling this weekend,” said Mike DiLorenzo, public relations manager for show’s organizer, the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association (LEMTA). “This is a great sign for the economy and helps make the show a success. This year was much better than recent years for the dealers and vendors.”

One of the many boat dealers agreed with the positive direction of the show and the attitudes of people.

“It has been a successful show for us,” said Tighe Curran, general manager of Pier 33, a boat dealer located in St. Joesph, Mich. “The weather was perfect and we achieved our sales goals.

“The consumers have been really optimistic this year. Everyone that we talked to has been very upbeat. We did not hear one mention of high gas prices in any conversation, which is a great sign for things out there.”

One of the highlights of the show were the demonstrations of the FlyBoard, an apparatus that uses a jet ski to power water jets that propel an operator both into the air and under water.

Dozens would gather along Trail Creek to watch the demos, with many more people watching from across the river.

“We had some great crowds out here,” said FlyBoard operator Brandon Robinson. “They really seemed to enjoy the demos and I fed off their energy; I wanted to give them a great showing.”

This is only the second show that the Lady Lake, Fla.-based FlyBoard USA dealer has provided an exhibition. The water machine retails around $8,000.

To complete a Surf and Turf theme at Washington Park for the four days, the first Annual Michigan City RV Show set up camp at the other end of the property.

More than 55 pop-ups, travel trailers, fifth-wheels, and motor homes along with a host of vendors represented the RV industry.

“We were very pleased with the amount of exhibitors,” said Chuck Oberlie, the show’s co-chair and former mayor of Michigan City. “The attendance was pretty good for the first show. We will analyze what we did well and can do better and build on that for next year.”
