What a great review! Does Carlson's still have "baby beers"? Probably not. I remember being a kid and my dad taking us to Carlson's after a trip to the beach. He always paid with wet money - and $2 paid for the 4 of us. Congrats to one of MC's best institutions! |

QUOTE A sign of spring Carlson’s opens for the season By Deborah Sederberg Staff Writer Published: Wednesday, February 9, 2011 5:08 PM CST MICHIGAN CITY — The daffodils are still buried under snow and no one is firing up a lawn mower just yet. But Carlson’s Drive-In is open. Yes indeed, on Feb. 3, just one day post-blizzard, the familiar bright chili dog (or cheeseburger or fish sandwich and root beer joint) stood like a big orange sun and beckoned to beach days and long, lazy nights. Customers should be careful when entering the plowed parking lots because like most in town, the corners are guarded by pyramids of snow. But as soon as the car stops, a carhop takes over. “We have been very busy,” said Sophie Rusboldt, who has been with Carlson’s for four years now. A 2006 graduate of Michigan City High School, Rusboldt said Carlson’s keeps four carhops busy these days, when the hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Manager Laura Markowski helped to sell Christmas trees out of the drive-in restaurant’s parking lot last year, a long-time winter tradition for Carlson’s. She said, “People who came to buy their trees actually asked whether we were selling chili dogs. They were disappointed. They really needed their chili dog fix.” While nobody thinks spring has arrived, Rusboldt thinks that just knowing Carlson’s is open gives people hope “that spring might come some day.” On the other hand, Mayor Chuck Oberlie said when he arrived home from church on Sunday, “I had a whole flock of robins in my back yard.” Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil did predict an early spring. Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind~Dr. Suess
