I say good job, homeowner. If more of these worthless criminals were shot breaking into homes we'd have less break ins, in my opinion.

I understand the homeowner is a retired Chicago cop.

Police: Suspects injured during home burglary
January 12, 2013 8:15 pm • Times Staff

POTTAWATTOMIE PARK | Two suspects in a Friday burglary suffered gunshot wounds in a LaPorte County town, police said.

About 8 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Pontiac Drive in Pottawattomie Park following a report of a burglary.

Pottawattomie Park is a town within the city limits of Michigan City.

When officers arrived, a male homeowner was holding one of the suspects at gunpoint inside the residence, police said.

Paramedics treated the suspect, and officers searched for a second suspect who fled the area before police arrived.

Police were told the second suspect suffered gunshot wounds and he was in a home in the 300 block of Hobart Street, police said.

After surrounding the residence, police located the suspect hiding in a closet there.

Both of the male suspects were transported to the St. Anthony Franciscan emergency room in Michigan City, but they were later flown to another area hospital for treatment, police said. The suspects are in stable condition.

Police said no charges have been filed, but the case remains under investigation.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled Monday in LaPorte County Court.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact Tim Richardson, Pottawattomie Park deputy marshal, at (219) 874-3221, ext. 306.

Charges filed in LaPorte County home invasion shooting
Stan Maddux Times Correspondent

POTTAWATTOMIE PARK | Two men seriously wounded when shot by a retired police officer inside his home during an apparent burglary have been charged.

Marshaun Wright, 24, and Ladell Hemsworth, 23, are charged in LaPorte Superior Court 1 with Class B felony burglary.

Wright has a bullet lodged in his lung but no attempt will be made right now to remove it, police said.

Hemsworth underwent surgery Monday to remove a bullet from an undisclosed area of his body, said police.

According to findings of an investigation on file with the court, Edward Flynn, 67, and his girlfriend returned to his home Friday night in the 100 block of Pontiac Drive to discover broken glass in the dining room.

He resides in Pottawattomie Park, a small upscale town on the outskirts of Michigan City's east side.

Flynn, a retired Chicago police officer, told police he pulled out his revolver kept on his side and during a search of the home encountered the intruders.

Flynn said he pointed the gun at the men who began coming toward him.

According to court documents, Flynn told officers he repeatedly ordered the men to stop but they kept advancing toward him and fearing for his safety fired three to four shots.

Wright ran into a bathroom and when found by Flynn was holding his stomach.

He got up off the floor and ran out of the house.

Wright was soon located at a residence in the 300 block of Hobart Street in Michigan City, hiding in a closet and bleeding heavily from multiple gunshot wounds, said police.

Hemsworth was found by Flynn in a bedroom lying on his side and following a struggle held him until police arrived, court documents revealed.

In his findings submitted to the court, Pottawattomie Park Deputy Marshal Tim Richardson said electronic items and other belongings were being stacked on a bed when the homeowner returned.

LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi said he did not anticipate charges against Flynn saying the evidence points to him acting out of fear for his safety.

Flynn told police as the men were coming toward him one of the intruders kept his hand in his pocket making him fear that he possibly had a gun.

“A person has a right to protect themselves and his property or somebody else if they feel they are in danger,” said Szilagyi.
