3 added to MCAS wall

By Deborah Sederberg, The News-Dispatch

Three new names will be added to the Michigan City Area Schools Wall of Fame.

Honored this year are Kent Lange, John Troyer and John White.

Lange, who retired in 2001, taught here for 32 1/2 years. He taught biology and other sciences at Rogers High School and Michigan City High School as well as Krueger Junior High School. In addition, Lange was director of the Rowdy Raiders pep band and he served as class sponsor.

Troyer retired in 1993 after 33 years of service. At Rogers High School, he taught speech and theater and served as stage manager. He also taught speech and world history at Elston High School. He taught at Elston Junior High School as well.

Following 23 years of service, White retired in 1993. He taught science at Krueger Junior High School, served as dean of students at Elston High School and as assistant principal of Rogers High School.

This annual award, which was first presented in 1976, honors school employees who have made exceptional contributions to the children of MCAS.

Inductees will be honored during the 2007 retirement dinner Monday, June 11 at Blue Chip Casino Grand Ballroom. Social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $25.

Reservation forms are available at all school buildings and the administration building, 408 S. Carroll Ave. For more information, call Fred LaBorn, director of personnel and school communications, at 873-2000, ext. 311.

I'm glad to see Kent Lange is being recognized. He is an awsome dude! I had the pleasure of working with him during basketball and football season as he is the announcer for the games. He's a wonderful and patient man. He's so full of knowledge that I learned something new every time we talked.

I have always heard lots of good things about Mr Lange, some about Mr Troyer, little ever about Mr White.

Mr White was in his last years as a Dean at Elston when I was finishing my time there. He was very well respected when I was in school, unlike some of the people who were in those offices.

Is he a small black man? School for me was so long ago that I only remember Vern Ash (aka Burn Hash-lol) and Tim Bietry.

Okay. I remember him. He was the "other" principal. I don't remember much about him because I never had to deal with him. For me, it was either Mr. Bietry or Mr. Ash. But I don't recall ever hearing anyone disliking him, so he must've been a pretty good guy.
