Oberlie Lacking Foes For Election
Republicans don’t slate opponent for mayor.

The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - August is just beginning and, if he wanted to, Chuck Oberlie could light a victory cigar and enjoy his re-election as Michigan City's mayor.

According to both the LaPorte County clerk and the LaPorte County Republican Party, Oberlie has no opponents in the November general election, meaning he's virtually guaranteed to win a second term as Michigan City's mayor.

"When you look at things like this, there's still mixed emotions," Oberlie said Friday. "Overall, it says the people must like the direction we're going. But at the same time it creates a significant challenge. How do you excite the public about the issues?"

Republicans ran only one candidate in the primary in Michigan City, and the candidate - Keith Harris - will face Democrat Marc Espar in November.

The party had the option to slate candidates to each available race by mid-July through a caucus of precinct committee people, but chose only one Republican in Michigan City. Barth Hobbs will run against Angie Starks, Joe Doyle and Bob McKee for an at-large seat.

Republican Party Vice Chairman Tom Rutkowski, a Michigan City attorney, wouldn't say if more candidates filed for the caucus and were not voted in by committee members.

"It depends on what the party wants," he said.

LaPorte County Deputy Clerk Bette Conroy said Friday a Republican filed for the mayoral caucus, but was never certified, meaning no Republican is officially in the running.

Oberlie handily beat two Democrats in the May primary - former city councilwoman Joie Winski and Jim LaRocco, the son of former mayor Joe LaRocco.

Can anyone make sense out of this post from the ND site? I think he is saying that there was a mayoral candidate who wanted to run under the Republician banner, but what is that about Joie Winski doing in there?

Oberlie Lacking Foes For Election
The News-Dispatch knows there was a candidate for Mayor and voted on in a Caucus. The paperwork is at the County Clerk's office. It isn't that hard to find out! The Republican Vice Party Chairman should learn quick to be upfront and honest with the media. Jackilyn Hendricks filed all of the paperwork to run. The Republican County Chairman forgot to invite Mrs. Hendricks to the Caucus. The final vote was a tie. John Vail, pulling for Joie Winski and aking a democratic ballot in the primary, had the gull to vote against a Republican Candidate for Mayor. The reason was she didn't have a chance to win and couldn't raise money. John, nobody had a chance to win this year. If you want to build a party you have got to get people to run. What a blunder.

As bad as Oberlie is for the city, the lack of any opponent is worse.
