Parents Want Action In School Bleach Attack

CHESTERTON, Ind. (STNG) -- Parents of a Chesterton Middle School graduate who was sprayed in the eyes with bleach on the last day of school said they're tired of waiting for action by the police department.

"It's been seven weeks and we haven't heard anything," said Cindy Matteson.

Matteson said her daughter Bretta Carney, 14, who had just finished her last day of eighth grade, was walking home with friends after school when the three were attacked by a group of about 10 high school freshmen, some of whom they recognized.

They were hit with eggs and shaving cream, "which was no surprise," Matteson said. "It's like an initiation into high school."

But then one of the boys, whom Bretta Carney also recognized, sprayed the girls with a spray bottle of bleach, hitting Bretta in the eyes.

The girls ran to a nearby gas station where the attendant called for emergency personnel who came and flushed the girl's eyes.

Matteson arrived and took her daughter to St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City where her eyes were flushed again for an hour. She was given pain medication, as well.

Bretta Carney's father, Bob Carney Jr., is angry and says he wonders why nothing has been done after so long a time.

"This was just a hazing thing, and I'm sure they don't want the community knowing what's going on," Carney said.

Both men have made calls to the Chesterton Police Department, but say they have received minimal response.

Matteson said the same.

"The police haven't been very helpful," she said. "They waited two weeks to call Bretta for a statement and they won't give us any information."

Bob Carney says he has received minimal response from the police, as well.

"I don't want to see somebody's life ruined, but it seems somebody doesn't want somebody to get in trouble," Carney said.

"They told us they had more important cases to work on," Matteson said.

Multiple calls to Lt. Dave Cincoski, who is handling the case, were not returned over several days.

Chesterton Police Chief George Nelson said Cincoski was working on other cases and then left for vacation.

Nelson said he had limited information on the case, but added that since it was a juvenile case he could not legally address it anyway.

"I have not seen the report," he said.

Nelson said the police department had set up a station at the park near the school specifically to patrol on the last day, and extra officers assigned.

"A lot of the kids were throwing water balloons and had shaving cream," he said. "Our job was to keep them away from school property."

Chesterton Middle School Principal James Ton said he hadn't heard of the bleach incident. "That's an assault, as far as I'm concerned," Ton said.

But he said some students had returned to the building after school was out to say someone was driving around in cars throwing water balloons at students.

It's not unheard of for some perpetrators to fill the balloons with urine, he said.

"The people doing these things might not necessarily be students," he said.

"We take as good precautions as anyone can," Ton said. "The Chesterton Police did an excellent job."

Ton said the police department had extra patrols for the day.

"They were all over, in the park and up and down the street," he said. "This was the best dismissal yet, aside of this incident."

Ton said if any student has a problem in the street they are let back into the building.

"We never lock anybody out," he said.

The school also has more than 60 video cameras running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, that record what's going on in front of the school and on the sidewalks.

"I would like to see the kids responsible punished at some level by the school," Matteson said.

Matteson said while it's not unusual to see pranks on the last day of school, spraying bleach in someone's eyes is going to far.

"That's not funny," she said.

Does anyone wanna bet that the little punk is Somebody's son? From what I hear, Chesterton, Valpo--all of Porter Co., in fact--is not somewhere you want to have to deal with the po-po.
