The traveling circus and the airport (not traveling) just south of where Lowe's is currently located.
Baskin Robbins in the mall (had to mention that one again because Mr. Robbins just died last week) my hair (displaced by forehead overflow) "The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it: If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something."

I would refer the Gentle Reader to the threads on old MC stores and restaurants for excellent coverage of this stuff.

I had mentioned Gene's - what was Teen Town? Teen Town (in the early '60's) was in the lower level of what-was-then the Spaulding Hotel. Only open three days a week. For more, go to: http://www.bbpnet.com/pdf/2007/BeacherApr26.pdf |

Okay - The Barn. I guess I'm older than a lot of posters here - we don't seem to remember the same things. The Barn was on Michigan Blvd - east of the SS tracks on the North side. The used to have rock bands from Chicago and DJs from WLS come there. I remember one time either the Buckinghams or The Crykle played there - I was too young to go, but the next morning after church we're eating at M&M and some of the band members came in. I was totally into the Beatles - and these guys had hair! And Beatle boots! I was in awe.

I saw where someone mentioned 3-D Discount Store. Hmmmmm, how about Shoppers Fair?? That was there long before 3-D and was practically ran out of business when K-Mart came in.

Is it still there? I thought they tore it down when they built the new Jewel. I'll have to take a walk back there next time I'm in town. I've told the kids about it, but since I thought it was gone we never ventured back there.
Don't know if this is true or not, but my mom told me it used to be Winski property. JHeath, know anything about that? Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind~Dr. Suess

It was in shambles long before Jewel was built. But parts of the walls remained, and the concrete tennis court was was left to the elements.
I also remember an old log cabin, way back in the woods, somewhere between Lindos and the old auto scrap yard on 20. this is getting off-topic, but my brother told me stories of a building downtown in the square that actually had a sub-basement with a sand floor, and a little creek/stream flowing though it. I can't remember which one, though... |
