Went there for breakfast with morning with a few good friends. Mary runs a tight ship, but seems like a great person. I'm sure there will be other, more experienced reviewers, but I will tell you that the french toast was great.

Tim, I doubt you'll be disappointed with the pancakes. Pictures will soon be posted. smile.gif

I've heard good things about Mary's since it opened. I went out there once to eat on a weekend I think and they were closed. Gotta make a point of getting out there.

Attention Tim: Blood sugar is back to normal. The pancakes while not quite a fluffy as the M&M cakes were, they are just as heavy and filling. My eyes were bigger than my belly (shut up Jenny) and I could not finish them. I justified the pancake order that was done on top of the 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy with two eggs on top as being for some guy named Tim in Japan. I assured Mary that you truly enjoyed them. You would not have been disappointed

I have never seen starfish served on Freedom Toast before!

You know my stand on hi-carb chow, but that all looks wunderbar.

Had breakfast at Mary's this morning. OMG!!!! I give it 5 Stars.

First, on the menu you will find such things as fried bologna and corn beef omelet. Never have I ever seen a menu with those two items on it. Which is good, because that is definitely "country" food.

Second, Mary herself waits tables and she is terrific. I had an opportunity to chat with her and I really liked her. I made sure she had the address to CBTL before I left so she can see all the wonderful things we've had to say.

Third---THIS PLACE HAS THE BEST BISCUITS AND GRAVY IN ALL OF NORTHWEST INDIANA!!
(Just so you know.)

Tim, when you come home for Christmas, I strongly recommend you eat there. Also, I think we need to plan a CBTL brunch at Mary's.

My wife will be thrilled to here that. She fancies herself a real connoisseur of biscuits and gravy, pork tenderloins and pecan turtle sundaes. Though if you looked at her you would guess something more like tofu burgers and rice cakes.

Thanks Ang - funny, but I just asked my mom if she'd been there lately, as M&M was a family staple every since it was at the corner of 10TH and Franklin. She gave it a glowing report. Regarding M&M, I always have my memories -

My wife can make some killer biscuits and gravy. Gonna have to give Mary's Country Kitchen a try to see if they make the grade.

I've been to Mary's a couple of times now. I'm limited in what I can get there, but my mom said the biscuits and gravy breakfast was really good. What I've gotten has been fine but regular (grilled cheese, breakfast sides like hash browns). The prices are dirt cheap, so I love that about it.

Memo's is still my favorite breakfast place (mmm, pecan waffle). Looking forward to trying Sophia's House of Pancakes soon--maybe this week.

I've eaten at Memo's, but IMO the service there doesn't compare to Mary's. The portions are huge at Memo's but the quality of the food is better at Mary's. I'll have to try Memo's again soon to do another comparison, haven't eaten there since my Feb 08 trip, but I think I'll still be partial to Mary's.

The real question is which restaurant offers the cardiac-arrest-inducing small bucket of butter like the one in my pic?

QUOTE
East Side restaurant closes, then reopens

Laurie Wink
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - Mary's Country Restaurant, formerly M&M Restaurant at 1608 Michigan Blvd., has been open nearly a year and, after closing on Sunday, it was back open Thursday.

Mary Bell, restaurant owner, posted a sign Sunday indicating the restaurant was closed because of the economy. But Bell's landlord gave her a break with the rent, so she's back to serving up breakfast and lunch from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week, she said.

Bell is still hoping that business picks up.

"It's very slow," she said. "The economy has really hurt us."

The restaurant has a loyal following, she said, and one person actually cried when she decided to close.

Another person, 5th Ward City Councilman Willie Milsap, who thought Mary's restaurant had closed, said people in the neighborhood would be hurt.

"That's really tough on people who live here," Milsap said. "It's a neighborhood diner. It's a loss to people who live in the immediate area because it's very convenient." Milsap is one of her customers, Bell said.

Her specialty is "Mary's mess," a concoction of potatoes with onions, bacon, sausage and cheddar cheese topped with two eggs and served with toast - gravy is optional. Her omelets are popular as well.

Bell said she offers daily specials, and customers can order either breakfast or lunch anytime when the restaurant is open.

"People love our food and love our prices," she said.

Bell said she's wanted to own a restaurant since she was 14 years old. She learned the business from the long-time owners of M&M, who hired her at the age of 17 to be a waitress. Now her daughter, April, waits on tables at Mary's, along with her sister, Cookie, and another woman, Laurie.

She opened the doors of Mary's Country Restaurant on Nov. 4 - election day - last year. It's a day she remembers well. A place nearby was a designated polling place and people were parking in the lot, so they couldn't miss seeing the restaurant.

"We were packed," she said.
