Does anyone know how to get a hold of anyone from the MC Summer Festival? The numbers posted on emichigancity and at the library are no good. No one ever answers and the voice mail box is full so you can't leave a message.

Help me please....

Thanks

Thanks for the info. We sent in an application for the parade and haven't heard a word from ANYONE on the committee. We're not sure if they received it or not as we can't get a hold of anyone.

Soooo....
We signed up for the LaPorte parade, called, got a person to answer the phone. This person confirmed our application was received and all is well.

Be sure to look for us, Silvermoon Dancing Studio and the Silvermoon Goddesses at the LaPorte Parade.

If you have not heard from the Summer Festival let me know. We are a sponsor of the festival. Although I am at present in eastern Maryland I can put you in touch.

Baton twirling event set

MICHIGAN CITY — The city will host its fifth annual Baton Twirling Competition, part of Michigan City Summer Festival, at 9 a.m. Sunday at Elston Middle School, 317 Detroit St.

On Friday night, the Sparklers, the U.S. Twirling Association national champions, will fly in from Long Island, New York, for the weekends events. The competition is run by Julienne Close, who is a baton instructor in New York and Indiana, said Jennifer Ginther, director of the competition here.

Every year, Ginther said, Close coordinates the competition in conjunction with her and Joe Doyle from the Moose Parade and Show Corps, which this year marks its 50th anniversary.

Many other twirling groups will be here, with groups coming from Indiana and Illinois, Ginther said.

All groups entered in the competition Sunday will march in the Kiddie Parade at 11 a.m. Saturday at Washington Park. Immediately following the parade, from around noon to 12:30 p.m., a twirling/poms clinic will be open to the public for $10 per person at Elston Middle School.

The twirling competition will be the following day and is open to the public.

Call Ginther at (219) 776-8981 or e-mail her at ginther3@hotmail.com for more information.

Kiddie Parade abbreviated by no-shows

By Deborah Sederberg

Published: Sunday, June 20, 2010 4:12 AM CDT
Those who missed the annual Michigan City Summer Festival Kiddie Parade missed a perfect day in Washington Park.

The sun was shining, but a breeze from Lake Michigan kept the air comfortable as an abbreviated parade made its way through the park.

“I think some people probably thought it might have been canceled because of the (Friday) storms,” said Mary Zacharias, a member of the Summer Festival committee. “Or maybe some people still don’t have their electricity back.”

Jennifer Ginther, an instructor with the Moose Parade and Show Baton Corps and director of today’s fifth annual Summer Festival Baton Twirling Competition, noted that with the Moose corps, baton groups from Mishawaka, Illinois and New York also performed in the parade. The New York twirlers, the Sparklers from Long Island, are the U.S. Twirling Association national champions.

The Michigan City Soul Steppers also participated, with their usual lively and energetic parade routine.

Zacharias wasn’t sure how many registered groups were missing from the parade Saturday, but said, “a lot, a whole lot who were expected are not here for whatever reason.”

Everyone who was there appeared to be enjoying themselves.

In keeping with the theme, “The Emerald Jubilee,” several little girls dressed as emerald princesses and faeries.

Christin Johnson, a second grader from Prairie View Elementary School, filled her wagon with inflatable beach toys, many of them green, while she wore tropical garb. She called her entry the “Emerald Princess Cruise Ship.”

Summer Festival Chairman Joe Doyle, home for just two days from the St. Joseph Regional Health Care System rehabilitation unit in Mishawaka, was on hand for the parade just as he always has.

He said he was suffering from an infection of the brain, but is feeling better. “I’ve even gained some weight,” he said.

Making note of the sunshine and blue skies, he said he wished more people could have enjoyed the day, but he understood how the storms and a variety of concerns could have kept some people away. “The park department started working at 3 in the morning to make sure the park would be in shape for the parade,” he added.

Bill Greene, another festival committee member, distributed cold drinks at the end of the parade route.

“It’s a beautiful day,” he noted.
