Police were called to the southwest side nature preserve around 8:30 a.m. after an officer patrolling the area spotted red and white spray paint on the side of one of the park's two bathrooms. When police investigated the paint, they found several dozen racial slurs, swastikas and drawings of male and female genitalia both inside and outside of both bathroom buildings. The park features bathroom facilities on both the north and south side. Vandals also apparently spray painted all four sides of a Tonn and Blank work trailer. Third-Ward Michigan City Councilman and sanitary district employee Ron Meer said he worked Sunday morning with a crew from the district to clean up the area. He said there were also references to Sen. Barack Obama painted alongside the racial slurs and genitalia, but nothing was painted on two shelters next to each of the bathrooms. Michigan City authorities said they found 12 instances of vandalism in or on bathroom walls, seven instances on siding, four instances on the trailer and two on toilets.
