A paper box factory that serves various retailers and makes cotton-filled jewelry boxes is planning a major expansion in Michigan City.

Michigan City Paper Box Co. is investing $353,185 in its LaPorte County facility at 1206 Pine St., where it will maintain 16 jobs. The growing business just invested more than $700,000 in two new automated lines four years ago.

"Michigan City, Ind., continues to attract and retain global companies," Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer said. "We are proud to be a partner with great companies that continue to call Michigan City home."

The company, which has been family-owned since 1904, will add new technology at its Michigan City location.

“Our company is committed to manufacturing the highest quality retail packaging products in the industry and upholding an unparalleled standard of customer service,” President Al Hoodwin said.

“Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, we will continue to expand our products and services to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers all over the world. We are proud to call Michigan City, Ind., home.”

Michigan City Paper Box Co. makes packages for Wal-Mart, Gap, K-Mart, Banana Republic, Kohl’s, Coldwater Creek and Lord and Taylor.

The city is giving the company a tax break.

“Michigan City has a robust BR&E program that has been successful in expanding and retaining local manufacturers like Michigan City Paper Box Co.,” Economic Development Corp. Michigan City, Executive Director Clarence Hulse said. “The EDCMC will continue its mission in attracting and retaining key industries to our community.”
