Indianapolis, IN - Governor Pence will announce his selection for Auditor of State at a press conference on Thursday. He accepted Tim Berry’s resignation as Auditor on Tuesday. Deputy Auditor Kirke Willing started service as Auditor today on an interim basis.

“We thank Tim for his service to the people of Indiana,” said Pence. “He put taxpayers first, implemented new financial accounting software and worked closely with local governments in his role as Auditor, and we are grateful for his contributions.”

Pence will announce the next Auditor of State at a press conference in the Governor’s office on Thursday, August 15 at 9:15 a.m. The Governor’s appointee will complete Berry’s term, which runs through 2014. The swearing-in ceremony is planned for Monday, August 19.

Berry was elected Chair of the State Republican Party on July 22, and assumed those responsibilities fulltime today. He has served as Auditor since 2007.

INDIANAPOLIS - Gov. Mike Pence has named Dwayne Sawyer as Indiana's next state auditor.

The governor's office says Sawyer will be sworn into office on Monday. The new auditor's term will run through the end of 2014, with that office up for election next year. Sawyer plans to run for election.

Sawyer comes to his new position from the Brownsburg Town Council, where he's been president since 2012. Sawyer was elected to the council in 2009.

Professionally, Sawyer is a financial analyst and information technology specialist.

Former Auditor Tim Berry resigned Wednesday to begin working fulltime as the new state Republican Party chairman. He had been state auditor since 2007.

Deputy auditor Kirke Willing has been serving as the interim state auditor.

Duties of the auditor's office include accounting for state revenue and spending and making tax revenue distributions to local governments.

Sawyer's resignation letter

INDIANAPOLIS | Dwayne Sawyer, the first black Republican to serve in statewide office, resigned his post as Indiana state auditor Tuesday morning, just three months after taking office.

"Due to family and personal concerns, I have come to the conclusion that it will be in the best interests of my family and the people of Indiana whom I have been honored to serve that I resign from the office of Indiana auditor of state," Sawyer said in a statement issued by Gov. Mike Pence's office Tuesday morning.

The resignation, accepted by Pence, is effective Dec. 15.

"His reason for resigning had to do with personal and family circumstances and I respect his decision to step aside," Pence said in the statement. "Hoosiers can be assured that Mr. Sawyer's resignation had nothing to do with his fiduciary responsibilities for the state or his execution of his duties as auditor."

Sawyer is the former president of the Brownsburg Town Council. He was sworn in Aug. 19 to finish the 16 months remaining in the second term of Tim Berry, who resigned the week before to become chairman of the Indiana Republican Party.

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody issued a statement that wished Sawyer and his family the best then slammed the Republicans.

"Years of Republican financial mismanagement such as overpayments at the BMV and the Daniels administration’s loss of $350 million show that Hoosiers deserve a government that is working for them, not against their financial interests," Zody's statement said.

"Indiana Democrats will work tirelessly to ensure that accountability and balance is restored to state government in the 2014 elections and beyond.”

Governor Pence names Suzanne Crouch as Auditor of State for Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS—Governor Mike Pence today announced Representative Suzanne Crouch as Auditor of State for Indiana. She will complete the term held by Dwayne Sawyer which runs through 2014.

“Suzanne Crouch has a lifetime of experience and a heart for public service,” said Governor Pence. “Suzanne’s fiscal leadership in the Indiana General Assembly, her distinguished public career in local government, and financial background will be valuable assets to our state.”

Crouch served two terms as the Auditor of Vanderburgh County, and was president of the Vanderburgh County Board of Commissioners. She was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 2005 and serves as Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

The Auditor of the State has four primary duties: accounting for all of the state’s funds; overseeing and disbursing county, city, town and school tax distributions; paying the state’s bills; and paying the state’s employees.

Crouch received her degree from Purdue University. She is married to Larry Downs, and they have one daughter.

Erin Sheridan, the Chief of Staff for the Office of the Auditor, is serving as Auditor on an interim basis until January 2, 2014.
