So Michigan City is joining places like Chicago in going to the eye in the sky cameras all over town... How do people feel about that?
http://emichigancity.com/news.htm#Westcott QUOTE Westcott Park Police Security Camera Activated Mayor Chuck Oberlie and Police Chief Mark Swistek announced today that a newly installed “Police Camera” has been installed and activated at Westcott Park, located on Michigan Boulevard at U.S. Hwy. 12. Mayor Oberlie said, “The Michigan City Police Department has long embraced achieving public safety enhancements through the use of new technology and this is another example of adding to the ‘toolbox’ of items at our disposal to protect the public.” Chief Swistek said, “The security camera at Westcott Park has been tested and is working well. To supplement the aesthetic enhancements of Westcott Park, the MCPD is working proactively to establish a secure environment at the park for the benefit of all citizens who visit this new public amenity.” As additional funds become available, more cameras will be installed in the city |

QUOTE Security camera sends the wrong message Published: Tuesday, June 7, 2011 5:05 PM CDT Mayor Oberlie, the Park Board, and Police Chief Swistek have missed the mark again by installing the blue flashing “eye in the sky” security camera in Westcott Park. Westcott Park was touted as the “necessary” cornerstone of the Lowehann Anderson Trail Creek Redevelopment Plan. So the city spends $1 million, during a recession, to build a park. I am not sure who would want to develop a shopping mall, or high end housing next to a blue flashing police box. These “Flashing Boxes” are only used in the worst neighborhoods of Chicago, where gang activity and drug use is out of control. These boxes send a message, not that you are being monitored, but that you are somewhere unsafe. At worst, the placement of this “flashing eye” in one of the highest density African American sections of Michigan City is racist. Why don’t we have this “safety toolbox” item, as the mayor calls it, in Washington Park, or Patriot Park? Why only bordering a largely African American neighborhood? At best, we have just put a blue blinking billboard next to our largest revenue generator (Blue Chip) that tells visitors that our parks are unsafe, and need to be monitored. If you want to monitor our parks for safety, with security cameras do it discreetly (turn off the blue light). Please do not single out specific parks, ethnic groups, or areas for additional scrutiny, and leave other areas of the city largely unprotected.Discretion is the better part of valor.
