QUOTE
Post-Tribune Top 5

1. LaPorte: It looks like everyone else in the DAC is going for second place with the way the Slicers have been playing.

2. Michigan City: It's been a while since the Wolves were this good, but they've already defeated Crown Point, Chesterton and Valparaiso in DAC play.

3. Marquette: The Class 1A No. 1 Blazers lost at South Bend St. Joseph's Tuesday, but they're still better than most 4A teams.

4. Lowell: The Red Devils are off to a good start in the Northwest Crossroads at 4-0, but that will be tested today at home against Andrean.

5. Washington Twp.: The Senators are looking good with a couple wins over bigger schools despite losing a large part of last year's sectional champion squad.
Player of the week

Lauren Chambers, Washington Township -- She was a hitting machine Saturday in the West Central Invite in leading the Senators to a 3-1 record. She produced 25 kills, six block kills and 15 aces in Washington's four matches.
Match of the week

Chesterton Invite -- Some region teams who are playing well this season will be on hand at Chesterton, including Crown Point, Boone Grove and Hobart. 9 a.m. Saturday

-- Compiled by deputy sports editor Steve T. Gorches

This is actually an interesting story. I had zero expectations for this team, but suddenly they very well might be the second -- at worst, third -- best team in the Duneland Conference. They're not La Porte, but are much, much better than anticipated.

Its nice to see Sarah McFarland (I forget her new married name) getting this program back to where it was in the not to distant past. Really outside of track/cross country, volleyball was the other really successful program in the MCAS.

Let's not forget about Tennis. The girls tennis program has been consistently successful since the consolidation.

Tennis does well because they've had the same coach since I was in high school back in the 80's. Consistency is one of the keys of success.
