STAFF REPORTS

MICHIGAN CITY — The intersection of U.S. 20 and 421 was closed for several hours due to an accident early Sunday morning.

A vehicle traveling westbound in the outside lane of U.S. 20 went off the road and hit a NIPSCO utility pole by U.S. 421 at 3:12 a.m., according to a report from the Michigan City Police Department.

The pole snapped then fell onto the lines for the northbound traffic lights, the report stated, and a power outage occurred in the area.

The vehicle was allegedly traveling too fast to stop in time given the slick condition of the roadway. Freezing rain was reportedly falling at the time of the accident.

The eastbound and westbound lanes were closed until late morning, and the northbound and southbound lanes were still closed as of 6 p.m., according to Cpl. Greg Radiger of the MCPD.

Nick Greenawalt, meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said the closest weather report, from 3:54 a.m. at the Municipal Airport, reported visibility would be two and a half miles with a temperature hovering around the freezing point, 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

The worst of the storm occurred between 2 and 5 a.m., Greenawalt said.

In addition to the weather, the driver told MCPD officers the brakes on his vehicle had problems he had not yet fixed.
