QUOTE Downtown Michigan City The South Shore in Michigan City runs down the middle of 10th Street from Sheridan Avenue to Huron, then shifts to 11th Street, where it runs down the middle of the road to Michigan Boulevard. The new tracks will run along the south side of 10th Street, then the north edge of 11th, making the latter a one-way eastbound street. The 21 crossings that will be eliminated are at Hayes, Greeley, Hancock, Seymour, Douglas, Carlon, Grant, Donnelly, Clair, 10th and Huron, Kentucky, Tennessee, Elston, Manhattan, Buffalo, Pine, Spring, Cedar, York, Maple and Phillips. This is an update from City planner Craig Phillips
QUOTE The streets including Hayes, Greeley, Hancock, Seymour, Douglas, Grant, Huron, Kentucky are NOT closing. The article is somewhat confusing. All of the streets that intersect 10th street to the north between and including Huron and Sheridan will remain open as they are now. What NICTD meant by the article is those intersections will no longer be part of NICTD's inventory of "crossings." The tracks will be taken out of 10th Street and reconstructed in a dedicated corridor to the south of 10th as plans have shown previously up to this point. 10th Street will become a regular 2-way street without tracks in the pavement. The crossing at Kentucky will be incorporated into a newly designed crossing along with Chicago Street. I feel it's necessary to clear up this confusion this article has created |
