MICHIGAN CITY — Thanks to city approval, the Washington Park amphitheater will house a “Sounds of the ’70s” concert.

The Michigan City Park Board unanimously approved a lease agreement Wednesday with organizer Candice Adams to hold the event from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, on park department property.

Adams said she is working with a Seattle company to bring the three-band concert to Michigan City on the same weekend as The Patch reunion.

“We will have a tent, food, beer and two officers on duty,” Adams said.

A temporary beer-and-wine permit will be granted prior to the show date.

Bands slated to perform are Harold, Melvin and the Blue Notes and Angela Winbush. A third performance will feature either Najee or Ray Goodman and Brown. Tickets will be $25 for front seating and $20 for lawn seats.

Fire Marshal Kyle Kazmierczak recommended the board’s approval.

“There will be an emergency vehicle lane for us to get in and out, which was our only concern” Kazmierczak said. “We encourage (the board) to do this, and it would be a great gem for the citizens of Michigan City.”

Board President Phil Freese said, “It sounds good to me. It seems well organized, and all the ducks are in a row.”

Board member Tom Milcarek added the event would be “a great addition to the amphitheater.”

Adams expects anywhere from 500 to 700 people to attend the concert.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the board:

• Agreed to consolidate the positions of oasis clerk and admissions clerk at the splash pad. To “save costs,” one person will hold the position of oasis admission clerk.

• Allie Laun, a Real Services representative, presented an idea for Michigan City Senior Center to host lunches for people 60 and older.

“This is the ideal location, and the only Senior Center in the area that does not already do this,” Laun said.

Her idea included holding the lunches from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays.

Park Superintendent Jan Orlich said the issue will be discussed at a future board meeting.
