Get More Buck for Your Bang

As a campaign to reduce violent crime involving guns the Michigan City Police Department is spearheading a countywide gun exchange program. We are urging residents to turn in handguns and long guns to the Michigan City Police Department in exchange for a Wal-Mart Gift Card.

These weapons are often sitting in closets, drawers, or basements. Some are broken, unable to be fired, dangerous, or just no longer wanted or needed. We have experienced people inheriting various guns in which they both have no desire to keep, shoot or store in their home and are often looking for a method or source to get rid of the gun in a safe and responsible manner.

Often guns that are no longer used by their owners are subject to falling into the wrong hands. These weapons may become an integral part of violent crime involving children, parents, relatives and friends.

The objective of the Get More Buck for Your Banggun exchange program is to reduce the number of weapons available on the streets of Michigan City, LaPorte County, and our surrounding communities.

With the partnership of Horizon Bank, Wal-Mart, Member’s Advantage Credit Union, Filter Specialists Inc., R&L Roofing, Mayor Ron Meer, Prosecutor Bob “Z” Szilagyi, the News-Dispatch and LaPorte Herald Argus, the Michigan City Police Department are offering a $50.00 Wal-Mart Gift Card in exchange for your handgun or a $25.00 Wal-Mart Gift Card for your long gun.

Please bring any handgun, rifle, shotgun or long gun to the lobby of the Michigan City Police Department on the following dates and times:

Friday April 26th - 9:00am to 2:00pm
Saturday April 27th - 9:00am to 1:00pm

We will also be accepting old, unwanted or unused ammunition.

April 27, 2013 ( MICHIGAN CITY, Ind.) -- Police in a northern Indiana city are collecting unwanted guns to keep them from ending up on the streets.

The annual Michigan City police "Get More Buck for Your Bang" event continues through Saturday. Gun owners who turn in handguns they no longer want receive a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. Rifles bring $25 cards.

Michael Bechinske tells WSBT-TV he's giving up his .25 caliber pistol. He says it's a "gut gun" and isn't safe to have or use.

Since 2007, police have collected more than 450 weapons.

Sgt. Chris Yagelski says police aren't worried about people having guns in their homes. They're concerned that those guns might be stolen.

Rifles are melted down at a local steel mill. Handguns and collectables are displayed in a bullet proof case.

MICHIGAN CITY -- Sixty-nine guns were turned in to city police in exchange for Walmart gift cards during an annual weekend exchange.

Forty handguns, along with 26 long guns and three starter pistols that shoot blanks were collected Friday and Saturday, said police spokesman Chris Yagelski. He said $50 gift cards were awarded for handguns and $25 gift cards were given for a rifle or shotgun.

The handguns will go into a bulletproof glass display case in the lobby that holds more than 500 handguns taken from past exchanges, which started in 2007, Yagelski said. The long guns will be taken to an area steel mill and melted down, he said.

Yagelski said the purpose of the exchange is to get guns that could pose a danger to members of the public and police officers off the streets.
