MICHIGAN CITY — U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Lake Hills Elementary School on Wednesday morning to highlight the school district’s partnerships with community organizations and higher-education institutions.

“We extended the invitation to him, and we’re just thrilled he’s able to take time out of his busy schedule to be here,” said Betsy Kohn, Michigan City Area Schools spokeswoman.

Duncan will tour the school, which will be designated a science, technology, engineering and math magnet school in the fall, and give a short talk to area leaders, teachers, parents and students about the role they have in renewing and improving schools, Kohn said. Mayor Chuck Oberlie also will attend.

For several years, MCAS Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins worked under Duncan when she was chief education officer in Chicago Public Schools and he was in charge of the school district.

Duncan’s talk, which begins around 9:35 a.m., will air live on Channel 98 and on the MCAS website.

Did anyone get to go? I am curious as to how it went. It isn't everyday that a cabinet official shows up at one of your schools.

Duncan: MCAS on right track

Secretary of education visits school, speaks to group of 50

MICHIGAN CITY — Michigan City Area Schools is on the right track with its new initiatives to enrich the education of students at all levels, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said during a visit Wednesday to Lake Hills Elementary School.

“I feel very, very good about the direction Michigan City schools are taking and the collaboration that’s happening between the schools, the teachers’ union, local businesses and area colleges,” Duncan said. “It’s being done in ways that have never happened before here, and in ways that are absolutely necessary for the future of education.”

Duncan first took time to tour some classrooms at Lake Hills, speaking to students about their various projects. He stopped to speak with Derrione Brown, 9, who was wearing a hard hat and building a model with Legos.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Duncan asked him.

“An engineer,” Derrione replied. “I want to build bowling alleys and malls.”

“Well that’s great!,” Duncan said. “You keep working hard, OK?”

Duncan then spoke to a group of about 50 students, teachers and community leaders about the need for the country’s public schools to follow the example of MCAS in increasing science, technology, engineering and math programming and giving high-school students the opportunity to take more courses that offer college credit, things MCAS is putting into place next school year through an elementary-level magnet school and dual-credit courses.

“If our children aren’t prepared for the workforce, we’re not doing our jobs as educators,” Duncan said. “Right now, there are 2 million high-skill, high-paying jobs that are unfilled in the United States. Our schools have to learn how to partner and do things in different ways to get kids the education they need to take these jobs, and many of them are in the STEM fields.”

There are no good jobs for high-school dropouts and few for those who only graduate high school, Duncan said, so pushing students to go on to some form of higher education is key. If more people gain the skills industries need, he said, it may be the solution to a better economy.

“We need to work from cradle to career to make that happen,” Duncan said.

Duncan also talked about his friendship with MCAS Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins, developed over eight years of working together at Chicago Public Schools.

“She’s an extraordinary educator, and she was an amazing partner. Michigan City should be proud to have someone of her caliber leading the way,” he said. “When I left Chicago to go to Washington, D.C., I begged her to come with me. Sadly, it wasn’t to be.”

Eason-Watkins said she has always believed in Duncan’s mantra for education reform: “No matter what their race, creed or ZIP code, every child is entitled to a quality public education.”

She used the opportunity to thank Mayor Chuck Oberlie, who she lauded as a strong supporter of the schools. Oberlie helped establish the Safe Harbor program, an academic support and enrichment program primarily funded through a 21st Century federal grant, she said. Federal grants also support MCAS math and science partnerships in collaboration with Purdue University-North Central, which will substantially fund the district’s summer “Stemstitute” for staff training and curriculum development for the new Lake Hills STEM Academy. Their newest grant is focused on algebra readiness starting at fourth grade.
