MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City Fire Department thanked the Michigan City Area Schools system for allowing the Department to use the Old Pine School in Porter County at a meeting of the Michigan City Fire Merit Commission last week.

The city is in the process of hiring seven firefighters, and only five need academy training, which started a few weeks ago and is taking place in various locations in the district, such as Pine School. The department currently has 78 firefighters, and 81 is the maximum.

“This is the basic Firefighter Training I and II, Hazmat and EMT training,” said Public Information Officer Mark Baker of the Michigan City Fire Department. “All are mandated requirements by the state of Indiana.”

Hazmat is training for handling hazardous materials, and EMT is training to be an emergency medical technician.

The Michigan City Fire Merit Commission is also updating its two-year pool of recruits. It has 160 applicants, some from as far as Washington D.C., Minnesota and the west coast.

Applicants are interviewed, tested and put on the hiring list. When a spot opens, they are considered for a job. The department is still accepting applications, Michigan City Fire Department Chief Ronnie Martin said.

The commission also announced Monday the promotions of several Michigan City firefighters. Robert Yates and Anthony Stahoviak were promoted to 1st Class firefighter; Robert Watkins and Barrett Taylor to driver; Spencer Walker and Michael Orzech to lieutenant; and Chris Furness and Spencer Walker to captain.

“Contingent on approval” of the Michigan City Common Council through an ordinance this month, Capt. Howard Fuller will become assistant chief, because Assistant Chief Michael Osborne is retiring, Martin said.

The City Council, by law, needs to approve all promotions beyond the rank of captain in order to release the funds for the job.

Also retiring from the department is Capt. Michael Moss.
