Being the lunch nut that I am, I am sad to see this place going. The food is very solid, and the kids that worked there are always really nice and helpful. Plus the prices are dirt cheap. They have made it 24 years according to the sign in the window, too bad they could go anymore. They have been trying to sell the place for a while now, but I guess no one has been biting.

Nettie's Hot Dogs closes its doors

By Amanda Haverstick, The News-Dispatch

A South Side spot for hot dogs and an icon for drivers along U.S. 20 has closed its doors.

Nettie's Hot Dogs at Ohio Street and U.S. 20 dished out its last batch of hot dogs and fries Sunday after nearly a quarter of a century in business.

Nettie's, manager Thelma Scott said, was opened 24 years ago by Nettie Aslanian, who died Oct. 15. Aslanian, Scott continued, previously operated a clothing store on Chicago's south side.

“When they closed, she came here and opened Nettie's up,” Scott said. “She was like a mother to me. She was a good person - a very hard-working lady.”

Scott, herself, has worked at Nettie's for 24 years. Her plans are to retire.

“We're hoping to get it sold so someone can take it over,” Scott said.

The business, which specialized in Polish hot dogs, did not see many changes during the years except an expansion.

“It was a small building, and she added onto it 11 years ago,” Scott said. “It's always been pretty well the same.”

The red-and-white building featured a winding lunch counter where customers could have a seat and munch on hot dogs. The building's drive-up window was another popular attraction.

Scott said she will miss all the customers, but will remember the good times.

“I'll miss all my customers, no doubt about it,” Scott said. “We had lots of regulars.”

Nettie's customers, Scott said, have told her they'll miss their favorite hot dogs.

“They don't want us to do it,” Scott said. “They want us to stay.”

Nettie's has seven employees.

“This is my first job,” said Shawna Brown, who worked at Nettie's for two years.

My mistake, it's not K Roger's it's K&M and yes, I think that is East Gate.

I remember there used to be a piece of paper on the squwak box at Nettie's that said.

"We are not a fast food restaurant. Each order is made to order, please have patients as we have patients with you."

That was always funny to me on many levels.

I think you mean patience. What you typed is a sick person as related to being treated by a medical professional. wink.gif

I know, that's why it was funny!

I always pictured a bunch of sick people in Netties making Hotdogs.

In all fairness, I am just playing with the words. I never heard a bad thing about Nettie's.

More about the gyros guy later.

I've eaten at King Gyro's on the east side. I don't know if the same guy owns it now, but the food was always pretty good. The service was a little slow, but there could be a reason for that I just don't know about. We used to eat there about once a month or so.

One day, I was enjoying a gyros with my sons at the old location of King Gyros which was where Starbux is. The young man who bought the joint from the outfit that owned the string of them in NW Indiana was discussing the location at Eastgate. He mentioned sitting there taking traffic counts, picturing in his mind how many people would be liable to stop to eat there. He was right! Since he had the guts to locate there and bring traffic to what many considered a dead shopping center, I have been a regular there. The service may not be instant, but that is because they make the orders one at a time. If he is the guy going to Nettie's, I will stop there, too. I hope he stays open at Eastgate; we will see.
